What the part number for the belt tensioner pulley for a 1990? It is making a very irritating squeaking noise so it is time! ;)

I guess a better question too is can I just change the pulley or do I need the entire tensioner?

Thanks!

P/n 3935819 ( it fits right up til 02 ) Cummins only sells it as an assembly. You can buy the pulley only through Dayco ( they sell the assembly as well ) but I recommend changing it as an assembly because quite often the shaft gets bent and that makes the pulley go cockeyed and you'll end up changing again later and the belt too. Something under the hood of my 93' is making a squeeking sound while the engine is running. It is coming from where the serpentine belt travels. I have asked others 12V owners and they say it's a pulley causing the squeeking. So... ... ... is the belt tensioner the usual culprit? I would be interested in knowing what a replacement costs and how hard is it to replace.

Replaced just the pulley last weekend and the sound is gone! I have since driven 2000 miles and not a squeak! I did not replace the entire tentioner for two reasons.

One, the tentioner only has 110K miles on it and the spring tention was still good

Second, Cummins wanted like $250 for it! :(

So, in the end I used the wheel replacement that I had on the shelf that I had purchased for the crew cab but as I was pressed for time (had a 2000 mile trip planned). If my memory serves me, that one came from Genoes Garage for like $30ish give or take.

If the belt starts running off the side of the tensioner pulley, or starts walking off other pulleys and gets cut up, the tensioner is bad. There is a plastic bushing in there that wears out. You can get one from the Case dealer for 1/2 the cost of Cummins. I can't remember the part #, but the one you need fits a CX240 excavator. Mine was a perfect fit, and it's the same stuff Cummins uses.

I know that you are successfully fixed and on the way but wanted to offer this. It may not be the best approach for everyone but it works great, especially if troubleshooting squeek location. It is possible and fairly easy to remove the tensioner pulley and carefully pop the seals out of the bearing with a dull pick. You can then clean, inspect and re-grease the tensioner bearing. Seals go back in surprisingly easy with the same dull pick.

Good Luck!

I went to this web site(wholesalemopar.com), i searched for belt tensioner, pulley and idler and found nothing. they offer the belt but not the tensioner.
