Does anybody know why the 96 to 98 12 valve motors are rated for different HP and TQ ratings based on auto trans versus manual trans.

Are there different parts used somewhere on or in the engine that causes this?

Were the figures measured at the rear wheels and the converter is what is causing the loss?

I am doing a conversion and have been told to get the manual trans motor, I have run across several automatic motors and I am holding out. So now it makes me question what is the difference. Locally nobody seems to be able to answer the question. Any ideas?

injection pump & injectors are bigger & better ... not sure about the camshaft.

They're right, the 96 & up, 5 speeds come as 215hp versions. The pump is capable of grande' fuel output.

Was told by Piers that in addition to the injection pump and injector differences - the heads and camshafts are different too.

My understanding is that the factory hp ratings are at the flywheel. My 1997 auto dyno’d at 160 hp in stock form at the wheels. Factory says 180.

I also understand that the 215 trucks react differently to mods. i. e. a #10 plate in a 215 truck will result in more hp than the same plate in a 180 truck.

Thanks for the info guys, this helps me look at it in a different light. I do plan on putting on upgrades and using the 6 speed but want to use the good stuff to start with.
