My son has a 1994 2500 which is stock (no modifications to engine or transmission). I have a similar 97 with limited modification. In looking at the two transmissions they obviously different. My question is how much difference is there between the two i. e. :

1. Model or type number (I know that the 97 is a 47RE)

2. Fluid capacity

3. I remember something being said about the cooler hoses or hose connectors on the 94 having a tender spot. How bad is this problem, and what should be done to deal with it?

4. I have a 97 Shop Manual --- are the torque valuse the same for the bands?

5. Is either of these transmission more robust than the other?

Thanks

george

The '94 has a 47RH. The main difference is the governor. It is mechanical with fly weights in the H. Electronic in the E. The valve body is different because of the difference in governors. Most of the other stuff is about the same.

I don't know about the fluid capacity difference.

The original cooler lines have plastic connectors. They get hard from heat and fail. Most people with them have replaced the connectors with metal.

You may have noticed that the transmissions are not the same size. The tailshaft is longer on the H because of haveing the governor in it.

You should get a service manual for the '94 because the wireing is different. The brakes are also different because the '94 has vacuum assist instead of hydraulic like the '97 and later trucks.
