Hey there all...

Have had a good working system with a 7 # pusher and regulator with racor prefilter... But...

Had a thing last week where the front main pump was not working. . only the rear 7#... thought the main was kaput... but low and behold, I wiggled the wires by the main and it works...

Since I rebuilt the engine and trans, had this fuel system for about 40K now,

I was wondering if there is a really great and reliable single pump for by the fuel tank like the FASS... . is that thing still having problems? any other systems that are good?... . Since I have a wire to the 7# pusher, all I need is the Pump as I have the tubing done...

TIA

Eric

Eric,

This seems to be the latest craze. You can buy the system or just the pump.

My new GDP pump is in the care of Brown. Hope to see it Friday, But more like Monday  It's the 90GPM system. I had gone thru 3 Stock style Carter Lift pumps, 1st came with the truck, and 1 new from NAPA, then a replacement. I wished that I went aftermarket 1st. The cost of the LP's from NAPA is 1/2 of the costr of a FASS or GDP kit. Moose00

Looks like the style that came on the 3rd gen and was mounted by the filter. . now I hear they are in the fuel tank? uhhh like EVERY CAR out there? Dang, my 76 toyota pickup had that kind of pump on it... . Could shoot a stream 30 feet!

So the cheaper of the 2 pumps and the kit... . what is all in the kit? is it needed? What pressure does it run at? I probably will keep my regulator on as it is adjustable...

that looks like a neat way to go. . Get rid of both carters and put this in... it will be after the 30 micron Racor to help protect it..... then a straight shot to the main filter... the Regulator goes to the inlet for the Racor so the pump has a little head pressure... this is why my pumps have lasted for 5 years...

The Walbro setup looks VERY interesting - but I haven't yet been able to wear out my original LP (now relocated to the frame!), and the original Carter pusher ahead of it in the 45K miles on the truck. And then, I have new spares for both sitting in my truck's toolbox.

Looks like a long wait for the Walbro - but by then, we'll have a better idea of what it's lifespan is as well... :D

HOW do you prime the fuel filter, if you have removed all electric pumps?

The stock L/P runs for 3 sec when you turn the key on, then the RASP takes over as soon as it starts, hobbs switch will turn the factory L/P if for some reason it throughs a belt, you have the best of both worlds a mechanical pump and a back-up pump

We have had good luck with the Aeromotive A1000 pump and 13301 regulator.

-10 from the tank to the regulator (which is in the location of the stock lift pump) and then -8 from there through the factory filter and to the VP.

My setup is currently on top of my toolbox waiting to be installed, but we have the exact same set up on a truck with a set of Garmin 8x16's, a Drag Comp, and HT64, and it will never suck down below 15 psi.

UNH-HUHHhhhh - that's what I thought when I read that over-enthusiastic "rid youselves of ALL electric pumps" bit... :-laf

Just had to give you a little razzing... ;) :D

Pretty satisfied with the FASS. Now that they have gone with new sealed-brush motors, theyre a pretty tough/beefy unit. Most of the problems they are having now is dealing with the 150 gph flow rate. First you need a pickup tube that can keep it supplied with fuel, and you need to have it switch off when the motor is cranking to allow it to start. . At 150gph, thats alot of fuel flow, and after going with 1/2 inch lines all the way from bottom of the tank, to the VP44, have pressure set at 13. 5, cant pull it lower than 12. Period, end of story. Its just coasting at that pressure, and the VP isnt getting blasted either. Good system.

Anyone satisfied using a wuss pump to fuel their beefy cast-iron cummins is downright rude. . :)

I couldn't agree more. That's why I went with two wuss pumps (in-tank+Carter) to feed my engine. You should never trust a single wuss pump.....

Good comeback mhenon. .

Yeah, there is no best answer. I just know the stock fuel pick-up (on 2nd gen trucks) is a major cause of problems.

So what is the answer to fixing the intank pickup??

If I was going to replace my current system I would problaby go with a RASP or one of the GDP kits. The RASP seems like the true answer, but its $1000. The GDP seems like a good solution and is much less expensive.

Trent,

I am on my Pocket PC and I don't have the link for PM's under the member names... Could you PM me with a quote for the airdog? I understand there is a special with filters?

I have over 50,000 miles on my Airdog with 0 issues. However if I was doing it over again I would buy a Helix 2 cam from Don with the mechanical lift pump lobe on it and his mech fuel pump kit he is selling and install that. No more electric lift pump problems and the benefits of the Helix cam to boot.
