well I just picked up a 97 4x4 and it has a hose that goes from exhaust manifold to intake side of motor I am guessing this is a CAL truck and this is a EGR system. can I remove without any problems?? I am familiar with 1st gen trucks but this is new to me THANKS

You are correct about that hose... . It is an EGR system... . pretty much a piece of junk. Also not good for the motor. When i picked up my truck i was putting a cam plate in it. So i had to remove the intake and found all kinds of build-up (unspent fuel and dirt together, not pretty). So the best solution is to take remove it from the manifold and create a way of blocking it off (i used just a piece of metal and used the bracket to clamp it down). Or you can buy a new ATS 3 piece manifold (which is the best way, but kinda expensive). Then on your intake, make a gasket (i used just a piece of plastic that was cut the same as the egr valve. You will actually lose boost through the EGR valve if you do not do this. Anyways, have fun.

i just plugged off the line that went to the EGR valve. You could trace it back and plug it off further back. That probably would look a lot cleaner... . maybe i should do that, now that i think of it. But you have to make a total block off gasket between the valve and the manifold if you are planning to do this. Boost leaks are not cool. Or you can find an out of state (non-CA) manifold... that is pretty much the best... they have a bigger inner casting (more airflow).

Egr manifold

everything the other guys have posted is true, What I did with mine was to purchase the Cummins Chromed 49 state intake, as some Cummins parts shops will not sell knowingly sell you non-CARB (California Air resource Board) stuff for a CA vehicle. So, in order to get the part you MAY have to provide them a CPL number from a non-egr truck. When I took my intake manifold off the first time it had a 1/8" thick coating of oily, black soot from the EGR valve all the way to the intake valves, that cant be good for the motor... I used a piece of 1/4" thick brass to block off the hole in the exhaust manifold. I do not get a check engine light as others have reported after defeating egr valve. (I left the vacuum line doohickey and associated wires intact though) I get slightly more boost (could be just the guages marging of error, but boost seems to max out a little higher than before 33-34 PSI)
