Alright gentlemen I've read threads on this already and I'm sure it's normal but what gives with the sound (sounding like a bad bearing) coming from either the clutch or the trans when going through the gears mostly 2nd 3rd and forth. I just brought this thing home on 10/30/04. It has been making this sound since the first time I drove it with 18 miles at the dealer???  Is it the clutch or the 56 honey? Is there a TSB on this sound and can anything be done??. Could this just be the sound this BURLY BEAST makes. will it "break in" or go away once I tow with the old sweet love :-laf she just turned 1000 miles all the fluid levels are good.

P. S this is my first six speed!.

More details,

Does it do it when you lug it as well?

If you put the wieght of your hand/arm on the shifter does it make the sound?

Mine never made that sound but there was a clutch TSB for the 5600 when the 03 was intorduced. I don't think they changed anything so the problem might still exist

Thanks for the quick answer. Mattymac

It does get loader when you lug it but its hard to say I really try not to lug it to hard as I know what effect this has on the drivetrain comp clutch motor trans ETC

And to the second part of your question I did try holding/pushing on the shifter seems to have no effect on the sound that its making.

matty mac

That echos what I'm hearing. My buddy Harold has an 01 HO 6 spd but the 2nd gens are so loud that it's hard to make out the same sound as mine but you can diffently tell it's there. It's just that these Common Rail Motors are so quiet that it seems I can hear every gears tooth as they hit each other. But as you wind the motor out 2000+ RPM's it fades away. I guess I'll get used to it I was goin to bring it up the next time I go down on my next war claim.

Buy the way I got to hand it to the guys at Glenn E Thomas Dodge here in the LA Ca area I did'nt even buy it from them and they are still standing behind the truck (got to love em). They are currently taking measurements to make sure that the truck is setting level. HE HE.

I have a squeak in my '05 5600 that occurs only when the clutch is fully engaged and the truck is idling along in first or second gear. Slightly disengage the clutch, but not enough for the truck to stop moving and the noise is gone. It also disappears at 1000 - 1200 rpm in either gear.

Any ideas? Truck has done it since I drove it off the lot in October. My guess is a bad pilot or throwout bearing... . Need to make a decision on repairing under warranty before she reaches 12,000 miles.

As you run up through the rev range in each gear, especially under heavy load like when towing our 5th wheel, you will hear intermittent buzzes or rattles coming from the transmission. These coincide with torsional resonant frequencies that excite the transmission gears to cycle back and forth through the gear lash clearance, thus causing the racket. The more gear lash your particular NV-5600 has, the louder the noise will be. Let off the fuel at the same RPM, and the noise goes away - the torsional excitation energy associated with the high peak firing pressures in the engine is cut off.

Well I took it into the dealer today and after everyone and their dog drove the beast including the service manager they decided that in my case it is not normal they are in the trouble shooting of the service call right now. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thank all.

Update!!!!Update!!!!

Alright Gentleman the 05 has been down at the Dodge dealer here in So Ca for the last two days. Here's what up, they had every one and their dog listing to the sound which as mattymac calls it "gear lash" by both driving it, having it up on the rack with it in gear and someone behind the wheel, and walking along side of it with it in 1 st gear. Now keep in mind that there just arent very many six speeds here in so ca, for obvious reasons so they (the service writers aswell as the service manager) really have no base line for situations such as this.

So without knowing anybody personally who has an 05 six speed I could'nt compare it with anyone else's. They had a new 2500 2WD,a 3500 2WD DRW, and a 2500 4WD all with six speeds soooooooooo!! we grabed the keys and off we go to drive the little animals that they have in stock , and sure enough guess what?, them little 56 honey's were talking to us just as the one in my burly beast. Now I have to admit guys I may have overstated the intensity of this sound but you 2nd Gen guys have to understand just how quite the common rail motors are. You would never hear this with a 2nd Gen ISB thundering away under the hood.

So thanks mattymac I think you were right on the money.

Rusty I dont want to leave you out either your explanation along with such catchy little phrases such as "Torsional Excitation" and "Resonant Frequencies" you make even the best of us Dodge guys glad there are still guys like you out there. THANKS.

WELL, we're all familiar with the phrase, "If ya can't dazzle 'em with BRILLIANCE, BAFFLE 'em with BS!"
