I have a 98. 5 with a 5-speed. Despite a few set backs i am satisfeid with the truck.

Sometimes though, a rather unique thing happens.

I will come to a stop and note that the engine is running about 100 rpm faster than normal ( even if a/c is on ). I normaly dont use throttle until the clutch is copletly engaged, so when i start to go the engine stops dead, as if the key had been turned off. If I catch the problem i can throttle slightly and go. Once off idle it seems fine. I dont see anything strange on boost or EGT gauges,

coolant temp, etc, and power doesnt seem to be effected going down the highway.

So far I've noticed it happens more in colder temps, but almost always after an hour or two of consant speed on the hyway, and not neccesarily with the cruise on.

I talked to my dealer last summer and he said that there was another guy that was hving the same problem but (of course) that truck never acted up when it was at the shop, either.

In november the timing mechanism went out of my injection pump and they replaced the pump. My problem has re-occured since then, and i fear that my ECM is bugged.

I am the second owner, but im positive this truck is stock.

If any one knows of or is in a similar situation, or knows of any possible solutions, lets hear them-- before I stall out in front of one of those new rice diesels! (dura-somthing) That would be a terrible embarrasment... .

There is a recall on the 98. 5 ISB 235's that may have something to do with it . Check and see if you've had recall 799 done. It is a recall that involves reflashing the ECM for an intermitent high idle condition. If you look on the front cowling their should be a sticker saying it was done or you can call the dealer and give him your VIN # and they should be able to look it up.
