Just got back from a 520 mile trip today to the famous Denali National Park. Fueled up when I got back into town and hand calculation was 16. 8 MPG. I had the cruise control set at 65 most of the way with a few areas up to 70 and was pretty empty. My current 06 Mega cab is all stock. The stock 99 I sold seems to have done better. I got 21 mpg on a 450 mile trip with the CC set at 65 mph. Please if there is anything to get a little better fuel mileage than what i just saw, I'd appreciate the info.

Sounds about right. I get 15-16 around town if i go easy and dont idle to much.

17- 19 highway with tires at max pressure. These are hand calculated not the overhead MPG DREAM meter.

I have gotten as high as 18. 1 on highway, but speed and weather/traffic have a significant influance. Averaging high 16's to low 17's most of the time. Winter fuel is definitely a bummer on mileage, but by adding cetane booster every fillup I can overcome some of the problem.

My '99 definitely gets better mileage - averaging 19's highway.

Almost all of my driving is interstate, I commute 140+ miles every day except for road trips to work locations a few times a month.

I got 16. 7 mpg Hand calc on my 05 last fill up with mostly highway miles. I cruise at 65 and, had a snowmachine in the bed for all those miles as well. Haven't had it long enough to see what I get totally empty. For this tank during my 50 mile commute I am trying to set the Cruise control at 60. We'll see how this affects the mpg's.

Mods can play a beneficial way to help fuel economy. I have 2wd qc with the BDTD on Extreme all the time. With the 50hp DDP injectors and 4'' MBRP I get 18 in the city and 23 hwy hand calculated. That's driving at 72-74 mph on hwy. My friends near stock 4x4 does not do as well.

I have over 85,000 miles on truck also. It takes them a good while to break in and the economy keeps getting better.

I'm getting 12-14 mpg's. I keep thinking it will get better as the engine gets broken in. I'm at 22,000 now. Will it get better?

Denali? Great choice. I averaged a bit over 14 on my Alaska trip pulling a small 5th wheel. My truck is a 95 4whd.

mpg

2004. 5 stock 4wd, 6 speed, 3. 73 rear, cap over bed. Around town in hilly northern jersey 18. 0. "no real stop and go here". On trips to Fla. 17. 2 cruising between 65 and 80 mph. I have no doubt that I could break 20 mpg if I cruised under 65 mph. mpg are always hand calc. Truck has 66000 miles.

Our first daughter may have been conceived at Denali National Park in 1975. We stayed two nights at the RR car "rooms" at the park. Oops, TMI. We also took the bus tour and had a 100% unobstructed cloudless view of the mountain.

My truck is getting 20+ MPG commuting around town and 10-13 towing.

My 2003 HO, auto 4x4, 373's, with mild mods gets about 13-15 MPG around town (Fuel, Temps & Heavy foot all play a roll). On the highway running empty at the sweet spot 2000 RPM's / 72 MPH I can get between 17 and 19 MPG. Again there are variables. While towing I range between 13MPG and 15 MPG.

U need some mods so that your truck will get to the rpm sweet spot quicker and burn less fuel getting there. I can't get over the 19mpg mark on the highway. But i can live with that. I wonder if the guys installing 3:42's are seeing an improvement.

First, your new truck is substantially heavier and more powerful than your old truck. I would expect some milage loss right off the bat. 16. 8 isn't really that bad for an 8000lb rig is it? There isn't a gasser or another brand deisel that can beat what you are getting that I know of. If you have the early ratio G56 manual trans, that might be about it. My '06 G56 turned 100k miles this weekend and averages 17. 5, I can nurse 18. 5 out of it by staying closer to 60 mph. If you have a 48re 3. 73 like my Mega did, you might just need some hard work to break it in. I was up to an even 20mpg highway with that truck, stock except 285 tires. It made three trips from CO to MN and back towing heavy, 24k lbs gross loaded, and watched the milage come up afterwards. It took 35k miles to get it broken in to the point where 20 mpg was possible. It started out getting 13. 5 when new, I almost cried:{

My suggestion is to work it relentlessly, and be patient, but be realisitc about what the truck is capable of.

I agree with Bholm, ever since I have started working my truck it has gone from 15 up to about 21. Now this is using the Trip Computer, when using pen and paper, it has came up as high as 19mpg when driven at 2K Rpms. The truck will go 600+ miles on a tank of fuel and has gone as high as 720 before. I cant ask for more. I wouldn't add more power, but a straight through muffler and some intake mods (I used the PSM towing intake w/ cool blue hose) and those seemed to help out. I don't think programmers will help a ton, but if like them, they are nice to have the little extra power, if you think you need it. I keep mine on the 40hp setting most of the time. Scotty

I am getting (since the Smarty) about 18-19 in town and 20-20. 5 on the road empty, (20% bio). . Considering my rear gears of 410 ((or is that 411) I am very happy. 29k on the truck now.

I'm getting around 19-20 in both of mine without trailering, my last trip in the 2000, the only tank of fuel since I'v owned it that I didn't have a trailer hooked to it. I got 21. 8. Hand calculated. I was trying my best to get the best fuel economy I could. trying Obeying speed limits, using cruise whenever possible, TST on level 4 or 5. And trying my best to accellerate and drive like grandpa. I added some Lucas to the fuel before I left. It was a 600mile trip all hiway. In my 97 my best was 23mpg last summer on a long trip, driving 55-65, however I have not been able to duplicate it since and am not sure if mabee the tank was topped off better before I left than when I refilled it, or if I messed up the calculation somehow. I belive I only get 18-19 in that most of the time. It's cheaper now to run the Ford (gasser) to and from work. It gets 18-19mpg driving @ 50mph steady cruise the 8miles to work, one stop lite, driving like pappy.

Can you tell when I got my suspension???

Here's a pic of my mileage since new. I've missed a tank here and there, but it's an accurate picture of my fuel hog. My '03 305/555 got 15-19 with the same wheels/tires... :-laf
