BD vs DTT

I purchased a used powermax3 from a reputable source. He had a standard output 01. He pulled the electronics off when he traded trucks but didn't take the J hook, spring, & bracket off the turbo. I have an 01 H. O. I called TST they said there is only two turbos used on these trucks and if I don't have a allen screw in the brass elbow then I need the J hook, etc. I don't have the turbo with the allen screw in the brass elbow but, the arm where the J hook is supposed to go is straight, not oof set. So, there is no way to put this J hook on. Why is my turbo different? Whats the fix? I plan on calling TST in the morning but, would like to know what I'm talking about.

You have a HX35, his 01 has a weenie HY35 that has a hardline wastegate that needs all that equipment hold it open. All you need is a boost elbow ask TST for one.

Like 4Life said all you need is a replacment brass elbow, TST should be able to provide one for you.

You can run with out the elbow but you would be much better off with it, especially on the higher settings on the PM box. I guess what I am saying is don't be afraid to drive your truck with out the elbow, but I would get on when you can.

What the elbow does is to partially block off the wastegate and allow you to get your boost numbers up. That will be very helpfull in lowering your EGT.

You can run it without the elbow, but the power & the boost will be less and the EGTs will prolly be higher. Get a pyro if you don't already have one already first.

Thanks to all! I will get it comming. I just have to take a trip with the truck before it will get here! Any comments about their products?

If you are wanting to run the box before the elbow gets there, you can take the stock elbow out and put in a 1/8" pipe plug. This will allow you to get more boost to keep EGT's down until the elbow gets there.

skerkvliet, like was aid earlier, you need to bring the boost up a bit. As for thoughts on TST,I delt with them a few yrs ago, great service and products for my 12V. Mark Chapple is very knowledgeabe too. As for the 24V though,I chose to buy elsewhere, onl because TST doesnt have a fueling box equal to the Power edge Comp. The powermax is a great box,but you need to buy an edge EZ now to get the full power a fueling box can deliver. This is especially true on your HO,the timing box would help even more. This is more important to guys going for high HP,and towing. I do not like to add fuel thru the pump wire tap when towing,I use only level 1 on the comp box. Enjoy your Powermax. Cummins4life, I worked on a few 01's,only the autos have the tiny turbos, the 5 speed trucks still have the HX35W .

BTw-- since all you are trying to do is reduce boost signal to the wastegate, ou can do it a number of ways.

You CAN put a pipe plug in it, but then you will essentially have no wastegate. Not a problem BUT the high fueling levels of the pmax can push the turbo WAY off its map. i would say you don't want more than 35-38psi out of a stock turbo.

A better way is to reduce, not eliminate, th signal to the wastegate. You can add a restrictor to the existing boost fitting (get an appropriate sized ferrule from NAPA and RTV it in place)

The other way to reduce it is to bleed off boost signal instead of restricting it. If you have a TINY drill bit, drill a hole in your existing boost elbow. It should be a hair bigger than a needle sized hole. many of the "boost elbows" that come with these units are just off-the-shelf pieces that have had a small hole or two drilled in them. if you go too big on the hole, then you will not only be wasting boost pressure, but you will lose wastegate function all together (won't be able to build enough boost to get it to open) i would guess that 1/32nd is as BIG as you want to go on the hole size if you drill one. (keep in mind that 2 holes half as large as the one big one will still be much smaller than one hole twice as large as the smaller ones-- imagine two circles inside a larger circle and you get the idea... )

TST has great product and customer service. The Powermax 3 will give you up to 120 more rwhp but easily put you to high in the egt range for towing. Tow on level 3 or lower and you will be fine. By the way the timing boxes don't give you any more HP on top end just more torque in the mid range. You will need a stronger clutch and p-plate to really use the power though. After you do that you may want to consider larger injectors and call Piers about a turbo upgrade because you're gonna get it-the upgrade bug.
