I am in need of new tires soon and I was thinking of upgrading the wheels if I can find a nice looking set for around $500.



Leaning towards Nitto Terra tires as they have a special on there website with free shipping and 20% off. Also read some pretty good things about them.



1st: What is the biggest size I can fit on the stock steel wheel with no or only a little rubbing at full lock? Here are the size choices http://www.terragrappler.com/



2nd: What wheel will fit and look decent and not cost over $500 for all four? And what would be the largest tire I could fit on that wheel with little or no rub on stock height truck?

Should I pay the extra $40 a wheel for the chromed finish?



Would like to get the LT305/70R16 E because of the E rating but I don't think they will fit the stock wheel..... I don't need the E as I don't tow heavy but was hoping a E would last a little longer.

Nitto tires and stock wheels

I have been running the Nitto 305 70 16 tires on the stock Dodge rims that came on my 01 truck. They work fine, are great off road and in the sand. The stock rims have the proper offset and are very strong, which is hard to find in after market rims. They are wearing well inspite of very rough rocky roads [Baja and Death Valley]. The steel rims can be bent back into shape in an emergency, whereas aliminum will crack and chip pieces off of them. You can put on tires as large as 35 inches, with just a 2inch leveling kit or the KORE system.

The 33's will just barely rub at extreme lock with a stock setup.

If you have alloy wheels they are 8" wide. Boondock's wheels are 6 1/2" wide. I've heard of some that run that size tire on 6 1/2" wheels but all the tire manufacturers recommend a wider wheel.

I believe the widest you can run on a 6 1/2 wheel (per manufacturer recommendation) is a 255-85-16. They are about 33" tall. Cooper, BFG MT's, Dunlop mud rovers are the brands I found in those sizes.



The lug pattern on our wheels are 8 on 6 1/2.
 
I run the Nitto 305/70/16's on '02 alloy rims... They're great. I previously had D rated Bridgestones and trust me, there's a huge difference from D to E. Worst thing I've done to my truck was run D's.

Ditto on that e-rating recommendation. I'm going to replace my BFG's with Toyo m-55's in the future as I destroyed three of my Bridgestones due to overloading.
 
Boondock, one thing to think about is proper offset. There's almost ZERO choices for out trucks unless you don't care if your tires stick out well beyond the fender (which is what most people do).

The wheels in your link won't cut it, if it's true they're -6mm offset. They'll put your tires about 3" beyond the fender. You need at least +20mm offset, ideal is +40mm. That is 5. 5 - 6. 0" on a 8" wide wheel.

Let me know if you would like to try on a BFG 295 (mounted on a 2001 alloy). If we could get together, it would take long to "swap shoes" on our rigs for a quick trial. I wouldn't mind seeing what stockers do for my truck's performance at the same time. ;)
