Just noticed that the owner's manual for my '96 Ram 2500 e/w 4wd has a maintenance schedule for repacking front AND rear wheel bearings at xxxx miles. ( the actual milage escapes me at the moment). First of all, I have never heard of repacking rear wheel bearings because they have always been lubed by the differential lube. Second, my dealer tells my that my front bearings are sealed and need no maint.

Any input anyone?

For once the dealer is right, only the 2 wheel drives need the fronts packed. I feel the same as you about the rears,if they need repacking I'd better get on it right away as it hasn't been done for 120k.

I haven't had my truck apart (Yet) but the 4X4 frount wheels is not oil bath. The frount spindels are greesed and not part of the axle houseing. I'm not sure if they are sealed or not, it wouldn't be the first. My dad's old Pord was a full time 4x4 and we repacked the wheel bearrings every 40K-60K depending.

The rear Axle should be oil bath from the rear end houseing.

Maybe some one else has had theirs apart and could help you more.
