2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission wheel spacers ?

Hello I would like to run some 07 rims on my truck I have searched here about running wheel spacers. I see some say the have never had a problem then there are some that say stay away from them it will put unnessasary load on the bearings and ball joints, I dont compleatly understand this as the dulleys have a huge spacer on the front. A 1. 5 inch spacer would put the 17x9 rim at just about center on the hub. Also I did not notice if any one that has said stay clear has had or seen a failure... thanks for the info
