I'm looking for a wheel well tool box that, when installed, will not extend any further in the bed than the wheel well. All the ones I've seen measure 8 inches or wider. The distance, as I measure it, is 7 3/4 from the side of the bed. In order to use this entire 7 3/4 inch space the box would have to be under the rail.

Does anyone have a box that stays inside the width of the wheel wells?

I have used these tool boxes for 12 years in my 1990 and then put one on my 03. http://www.pickupspecialties.com/tool-box-Delta-poly_wheel_well.htm. Cost about $114 at NAPA. After I bought the darn thing, saw one in the Cabela's catalog that I think I like better. Check out Cabela's.com and get one of their pickup accessory catalogs. I kind of think shipping charges would have done the Cabela tool box in. Recently checked wheel well liners from Dodge Parts on line and shipping alone was $40.

Anyway, used the Delta for years and they held up real well, locks worked and hinges held up. I like the one in Cablea's with drawers. Good luck!

I saw that poly one and it looks like it's too wide and will extend past the wheel wells into the bed of the truck. The Cabela's one looks like it will do the same thing. Did the poly box you had extend past the wheel wells?

Hey,

TUFFY makes a very high quality one. Try QUADRATECH. COM or TRUCKPERFORMANCE. COM for a look see. They come in black and aluminum. Have a killer lock set up and fit completely over the wheel well while not long enough to interfeer with the tie down cleets..... and no I don't have a set yet as the price is around 325 a piece with shipping !!!!!!

Tuffy has one BUT I am unsure if it will fit a short box quad cab. It measures 24"L X 7"W X 19. 25"H. It would fit under the rail BUT until I get my linex done (thus removing the drop in bedliner) I can;t get a "true" measurement if it will fit lengthwise(between the tailgate and wheelwell. ). I hope it does... although tuffy products are a little $$... they are stout and quite nice.

The boxes are 9 inches wide and do go further into the bed than the wheel well. You could mount one box on each side and still slide a 4X8 sheet of plywood into the bed. Aluminum boxes are pricey.

xjsuperman, that smaller tuffy box is about what I've been looking for. It's a bit pricey, though and it won't fit the shortbed. I've looked at the tuffy box that runs the entire rail like stick has. I like them but I think in a shortbed they will come close to the cab. I want to keep it 12 or so inches from the cab as I have a 2x10" board running the length in the slots. It keeps all my dog stuff near the cab.

I have a line-x liner in a shortbed. I have a dog box that sits in the back between the wheel wells and I have only an inch of space on each side before the wheel wells. I'm having a water tank custom made so I took all these measurements. There is 16 inches of space from the stake pocket channel to the beginning of the wheel well. The wheel well is 7 3/4" from the side of the bed and the height is 19 inches to the bottom of the lip. So, basically, you need a box 16 x 19 x 7. 75 to fit perfectly in that space. The wheel well is 9 inches tall.

Parshal, I'm also looking. I actually ordered a set from Home Depot and when I got em the fit lousy. Went over the wheel wells and left about a 4" gap! They were also wider than the wells. Took em back. Good luck, Doc
