Diesel Dynamics/May Madness

Northern CA dyno day

Moab Utah

Friends,

I am looking into the possibility of a trip to Moab for some fire roading and lite wheeling.

Thinkin' about the third week of April more or less (month from today). The weather should be pleasant during spring time. We could figure on a Sat/Sun if that works for others, or during the week.

I would need a long day to get there from my beach crib. I figure on finding a place to stay in the lower elevations near a place to get good chow. We could camp out one night too if that sounds good to you. I'll bring my portapotty/beer dispensor : )

How about some target shooting (Dee Rawson)? Bet we could find a spot to set up some cans. I'm no sure shot, but we did some pheasant and deer hunting when I was just a tadpole

I think this could be some good fun. An opportunity to view some of the best scenery the US has to offer. That along with a few good cigars and my convertible diesel powered beach cruiser, what else could one want?

HVAC--call DC and show em yar convertible beach cruiser, I bet they'd be available in a year or two:D----

this sounds like a blast, but I'm most likely toast for this--just got to play it by ear... . chris

I might be able to make that and sure would like to. Fire roading huh. Maybe the lockhart basin trail from Moab to the Needles thats a 50 mile easy trail with only a couple short rough spots definitely nothing serious, or there are a couple of easy rides down from Island in the Sky to Moab go up one come down the other, lunch at Deadhorse Point between them. Haven't been over Elephant hill in a while though not sure I would take this long rig over it but did see a ford crewcab back there once. Sat/Sun would work great for me I would check the calendar for easter that place gets packed easter. It is Arches N. P. busiest day of the year if I remember correctly and hotel or camping space might get tough to find. Always like to shoot. The more I think about this the more I like it. keep informed on the weekend you choose. If I am not already tied up up I will be there.

Easter???

Holy shirt, I don't have a clue when Easter sunday is! We will need to work around that day for sure. Lookin' for peace and quiet, not more touristas : (

Barry, you sound like you have enough local knowledge to put together a two day itinerary for us. Casey outta SLC may have a bering on the schedule since he knows his way around the area as well.

CSutton7, if I pick up some strippers outta vegas I bey you change your mind.

OH Yea!!!!!!!

Nowel... If its a quick weekend, I can probably make it! Shooting is good. However, my truck is not designed for rocks (only the ones that maybe encountered on a Hi-way):D I would drive that far just to hoist a few. .

No Rock Crawling For Us Full Figured Trucks

Steve,

I may dabble in the rocky stuff but I'm mostly in for the fire road runs and possibly a hill climb. Gary has a jeep and a couple others have crawlers as well. We may need to sweep up their remains when they fall back to earth : )

Moab at Easter - not

Not unless you've registered with the Red Rock 4-Wheelers for the Moab Easter Jeep Safari that is.

I've made quite a few Jeep trips to Moab, especially for the Easter Jeep Safari - week leading up to Easter Sunday. It's always great, but it's a full house event.

I figure I should get a car-hauler trailer and "trailer-queen" my Jeep there. Then I could have the best of both worlds, towing with my CTD and Jeepin'!

Except then I'd have to explain to my wife how we have to sleep in a tent, not the travel trailer. Oh well, looks like another solo trip:)

Uh, looks like we'll be dragging the travel trailer to Arizona this time. Doh! At least I get the best of one world;)

Rocks, dust, not me!!!

Nowel... . you think "maddog" cumminsferd mobile will make it? I would love to see that thing fly over some hills. :D

Steve

This post brings back some pleasant memories. White Rim trail was nice little adventure but I really enjoyed the area around Thompson Canyon. Nice steep dirt 'cat' roads and great scenery. Gotta watch out for 'pedelers' though. Might pay to get snow report before getting into the higher elevations. I have an old map of the area, if you need more information I can dig it out.

We are kicking around the idea of the same trip, only a week later. Didn't know about Easter problems, have to check the calendar. So where to camp, I would have to drop the camper to go fire road trailing.

Easter Weekend

I've heard the same thing "Boondocker" posted regarding the Easter weekend. If Easter is on the 20th then we would be better off going the following weekend I suspect. That would make it the 26th and 27th.

Steve, I'm trying to get Richard to go but I doubt he'll be getting to carried away with the hybrid truck. He's quite capable of snapping drivetrain components on the flat asphalt. He doesn't need to be in perilous positions and find out what else will break.

If you are asking me I would say the Lockhart Basin trail one day shouldn't be a problem for any 4x4 and then the other day take the Potash Road up to Jug Handle Arch and take that up to Dead Horse Point maybe eat some lunch up there either way a must stop just for the view and then go down the Schafer Trail to the Potash Road back to Moab. I think any truck could make that run. Saw a caddy deville on the schafer trail once doubt I would take mine if I owned one but it is not a bad trail at all. I will be out of town for the next week but will check this thread again when I get back. This is sounding like a lot of fun. Also it might be a good idea to make any reservations once the date is set in advance as this time year they seem to have something going on every weekend. Hope this works out.

THe other instructor I work with has a Landcruiser and goes down to Moab every year over spring break. From what he tells me it will be really hard to find a hotel either of the weekends in Moab. Like steve my truck isn't set up for slick rock, but Shooting does sound like some fun.

Let me know what you all deside... .

Wow, I would love to do make this, but unfortantely I have both my vacations alotted to going out to the Serria Nevada's this year, bummer. I have been to Moab, UT many times about 5 to be exact. I only went during Safari week once and I loved it but way to crowded for a country folk like myself so now I just go by myself on another day. Sounds like this could be alot of fun four wheeling and CTD stuff as well.

Gary get your Jeep fixed yet. I will be out at the Rubicon and running it from Tahoe to Loon Lake from June 24-27 with a day camping at Spider Lake and Buck Island Lakes.

Lockheart Basin Run is senic and can be done in any four-wheel drive vehicle and can be done in one very very lond day as it is 60 miles of off roading. Potash is very nice as well and much shorter. And not matter where you go watch for rain as some of the trails run in washes which is not place to be during one of there infrequent rain storms.

If everyone is thinking of April 26, 27, I can do that. I have a new Tent to test out. I have a shell but I want to try it out. I have done a couple of trails in moab and I have a couple of books with trails and GPS markings. One thing, if nobody has done the Oil vent fix, we have to avoid steep decents over 29 deg.

I vote for April 26, 27.

Nowel, love to go but... . with the new job, lack of accumulated vacation and the two ankle biters, i have to allot time off to them. It sounds like a great trip. went there on my honeymoon 8 years back. It's really pretty country. If you make it an annual trip, I can probably plan a year in the future. Doug Hatfield, haven't forgotten about you. glad to hear your jeep is still up and running. take guys. matt

Hello Person Fomerly Known As Ranger Dick

Since you can't go, maybe I could borrow your jeep?;) Whaddyathink?:D

Don't want it to be gittin' all rusty now:rolleyes:

My tall neighborhood Ford friend said he met you up at Kings Mountain School. John's a crack up for a PHD. Get him started on politics for fun, but be sure and bring your lunch:-laf
