the only plus is the variable geometry turbocharger. the egr when it is installed will negate all the advantages of the VGT and send this fine modern diesel engine back to the dark ages. egr is pretty stupid i think. look at many modern ricer type engines, and they do not have egr valves anymore. they can accomplish the same with variable valve timing [which they can also use to bring their power down lower in the rpm band] you'll just love it when your diesel egr valve begins to collect carbon on the valve that prevents it from seating right, then when you put your foot into it, you'll have no boost, lots of fuel, lots of smoke, lots of excess heat, more carbon to build up on the egr valve seat.....
the diesel egr system is only suppose to operate at light load when properly working, but at light load, there is very little fuel being burned, and not that much heat is being produced [compared to WOT full load] so the nitrogen molocules are not broken up as much as full load. and an egr valve is not suppose to operate at full load/WOT. you are putting the foot down to get power to pass/accelarate/haul something but if the egr decides to open then, it won't be pretty. engine knocking, lots of smoke, 0 power... sad sad thing [happened to me in my old 6. 5TD tahoe]
as you can probably tell, i hate the egr valve. i had one on my tahoe when i had her, and i disabled it [1/16" aluminum plate in place of gasket] after it began giving me troubles [then removed the service engine light bulb to fix it from being on all the time]
had trouble with one, learned about the system, will always have trouble with the system if it is used.
say no to egr
