A neighbor is looking to buy a Ram diesel but cannot afford a new one. He tows so would like to get one with an exhaust brake and possibly the six speed auto. So what models should he be looking for? I know they did not have it in 2004 when I bought that truck but don't know when it first appeared.

Integrated EB was 07.5 with 6.7 engine. Some very early 07.5 trucks had it but was not activated from the factory.

Thank you. If anyone knows any problems with the 07.5 trucks up to 2013 I would like to have that info as well. I told him 2013 was a good start but they are still out of his budget.

You can ad an exhaust brake onto almost any older Dodge. Chrysler didn't recommend it on trucks with automatics built before 2006, but if the transmission is modified you can do it. I had a PacBrake PRXB on my 2003 and I liked it better than the built in one on my 2008.

Buying a used 6.7 is a risky thing if one is expecting to get in and drive it without spending money. In my opinion 07-12's are not going to save enough to avoid spending a bit more for the 13+.A single episode with the after treatment system will put you behind.Being in Cali makes deleteing not an option

There is the Jacobs exhaust brake that could be installed as OEM from the dealers, auto or manual. But that is for 06-07 and manual trucks 03-07 5.9 CTD's. They are troublesome, they are vacuum operated, and the Vac Pump has a tendency to fail. Most went with the air operated Pac Brake. http://cumminsengines.com/uploads/docs/4081477.pdf Here's a link to it. Sag2, are you referring to the 07 6.7 C&C's, that were available in early 06 that had the integrated exhaust brake as an option? The dealers would install the dash switch and turn it on through the ECM.

I have been looking at asking prices for the used trucks in the pre 2013 range w/ exhaust brake and they are almost as much as a new Tradesman. Good points mentioned above. Thank you all. I will advise him to save a little more and go 2013 and up or a new one.
