I'm going to put a skyjacker leveling kit on the truck, and some day go to 35" tires. At about what tire size should you go to 4. 10's, or 3. 73's? I figure i could just save some money and buy an EZ to make up the torque, what do you guys think?
You didn't say anything about towing. If you don't tow or at least not heavy or often I wouldn't worry about it with 35" tires.
Now on the other hand I have 4. 10's with 35's and would not have it any other way. I even preffered 4. 10 with the stock 245 Michelins. The first two years I towed real heavy and often. Now I seldom exceed 10,000 # of trailer and don't tow as often. If I was buying a new truck today I would probably go with 3. 73 but never 3. 55's.
Good luck finding any two people that agree on this subject LOL.
the most forsee towing is an open car trailer, and a race car and stuff. 7000lbs at the most I guess. Maybe an occasional trip to the mountains with the cattle trailer to cut some fire wood. I was thinking more for the 4x4 aspect of it.
I think you'll be fine... I can't say when you'd "need" more gear, but between the torque of the cummins and the ultra short 1st gear and the low range, I'd say you'll be just fine w/ 35's an 3. 54 gears.
I concur! 4. 10's are great when towing, but in my case the 3. 54's are really awesome when your cruising at 75 mph and still sitting around 2000-2100 rpm's! It's all weather you tow heavy or not really. The low end grunt of this engine will work fine in 4x4 with or without the 4. 10's.
The only problem you might have is with the gaps in the gear ratios on the 5spd. Put a mild fueling box (or more) on the truck and you'll fine for a lot less money than a gear change.
