Competition Launching in 4Wheel

I was thinking about this a day or two ago.

For yall who launch in 4wd,, When do you shift into 4wd? Do you do a burnout in 2wd, then shift into 4wd and stage?

How long does it take for 4wd to fully engage. I would be scared of slipping into 4wd at the line, and have the axles engage 5' out from the lights and break something that way.

Any words of advice about WHEN to shift into 4wd?

Thanks,

I pop into 4wd when I leave the staging lines to the line. I don't do burnouts, I try to avoid the water by going around it.

Mine popped out of 4wd once, nothing broke, the truck just went sideways.

Grab 4x4 right as you are about to straighten up from going around the burnout box so the shift collar can lined up and go in gear. But if you are doing a burnout, shift after the burnout, you might need to steer a little to get the collar to line up. When it engages, there will be a light on the dash come on, it should say something like 4X4.

Ok, Thanks! I wasn't sure if the truck needed to be driven a small amount before everything would line up and properly engage 4x4.

I've seen the light on the dash, If I recall correctly it says "4wd" in orange.

When the light comes on, that's when 4wd is completely engaged?

Well, that's when the switch in the front axle 'thinks' that the front axle is engaged..... I've never seen it happen, but it could be reporting false data.

It has no feedback on the x-fer case at all.....

yea, when the t-case shifter hits 4x4, its in 4x4 or broke, no inbetween. there is a set of wires comming off of the disconnect on the front axle. When the shift collar arm moves, it will press the button and tell the computer its in 4x4. Now the shifter in the axle might break and show its in 4x4, but thats unlikely. Or the button might stick.
