I've got a 2000 model with the 47RE I assume. Anyway, just wonder when and how the converter locks. From driving it, it seems like 1st and 2nd the converter is unlocked, but 3rd gear the converter locks as soon as it's in 3rd? My truck pulls good in 1 and 2, but when it hits 3rd it pulls a lot harder. Also what about overdrive, is the converter always locked in OD or can it lock and unlock? Sorry if these are stupid questions.

zero lockup in 1st or 2nd without an aftermarket valve body... 3rd and OD will lock/unlock depending on road speed, throttle position, etc.

the shift to 3rd is unlocked

The way I observed the 47's operate is 1u,2u,3u,4u, then 4locked--feels like 5 gears. When you disable OD then it locks in 3. I've never observed lockup in 3 when OD was not disabled--without the mystery switch.

Of course mine locks when I tell it to  --and a lot of the time I drive it in 4 unlocked--twisty backroads and 4l is just too much and 3l ain't enuff.

well it turns out it's the shift into 4th that it pulls so hard, that's odd those if the converter is unlocked on the shift into 4th... hmm

Locked shifts are quite harsh. You sure you're not feeling the lockup happen in 4th? Thas when a stocker feels strong--all slippage is gone.

Or maybe something is wrong.

Mine is most definitely locking in 3rd. I can turn the O/D off and take off from a dead stop and it will shift 4 times. On the 4th shift which is 3rd gear with the converter locked it will sit you back in the seat.

if you lock out OD, then yes, it will go into lockup in 3rd, but if you don't have OD locked out, and you floor it, you'll go 1-2-3-4 unlocked and then it'll lock up in 4th

Mine used to feel sloppy all the time, could never feel any lockup. You guys that have a 47re that WILL lockup are lucky.

Now mine will lock in 3rd and overdrive, feels like a five speed.

i will lock in 3rd and shift 3rd to OD locked..... at least mine does

That's the way mine shifts too, did it before and after the Transgo shift kit. The 4th time it shifts feels locked whether the OD is on or off.
