My guess is that decision was made on behalf of the parts marketing part of Chrysler, possibly to satisfy dealerships. Probably in order to sell us more replacement parts rather than allow us to brag that as long as our trucks are routinely serviced our running gear and suspension parts never wear out.
I agree with HBarlow. Supply and demand. My poor old 97 only has 214 k on it and I had to replace a right front brake caliper yesterday. Guess they don't make em like they used to. I thought I had problems...
Our '05 Silverado has no less than 10 or 11 grease fittings on the front end. To date (65K), every front end component has been replaced once with the exception of the ball joints and steering shaft which have been done 2 and 3 times respecively. There aren't enough grease fittings in the world to keep that thing together.
We are on our 5th Dodge since my '92. I replaced a track bar once on my '01 and we just did ball joints and front universal joints on the highly abused '04 at ~160K. I'll take those odds any day.
