This is my first diesel. Since my truck doesn't have a distributor, to what engine component can I hook up a tachometer?

Someone here will probably have an answer for you, if not, call enterprise engine, 800-783-4929, They should be able to help you.

Tach

Do a search on alternator tach installs, good info. I do not want to have to change something every time I change my alternator so I will go to the factory type that uses a pickup. I have a freind who did his w/pickup bought from carquest positioned at flywheel. I have to get w/him for numbers and exact location etc. R C

BLloyd,

I know the 93 has an under dash plug that I used to hook up an Isspro tach. Not sure about the 92. It's to the right of the steering column and has 4 wires. Can't recall the colors right now, but a search for "tach under dash" might yield something.

Thanks for your input,RC. I did look up tach/alternator installs. You'd only have one extra wire to R&R on your alternator when swapping. Sounds pretty easy compared to installing an aftermarket pickup.

Thanks tugboat. Do you think you can look under the dash for me and see which wires they are? My truck was made 7/92 and came with a '93 owner's manual, so I'm thinking it might have that plug. Did your Isspro tach have the matching plug?

I just went out to the truck. It's a flat, black plug with black, orange, black & gray wires. One of the blacks may have a stripe, but it was after dark and I had to take off my glasses to see that close.

I got the tach from PDR. They have a conversion sheet for installation. The tach comes with a resistor on the back, which we don't need. Also it has 5 wires and the white one is not used. The others are black, green, red and yellow. The sheet of instructions show which goes where.

Also, the Isspro 2" tach will fit into a steering column, single gauge pod. It won't say that it's for a 1st Gen. Get the one for a 94 and it will fit. I had to clip one of the mounting studs to get it into the pod. Geno's Garage has them in their catalog.

Good luck!

For your information everyone, Autometer makes a 2 5/8'' diesel tach for wiring to the alternator, part #2888. As tugboatphil said, PDR carries a 2 1/16'' Isspro tach, and a separate wiring harness to plug into the stock tach plug. The plug was in my July '92 W250 and his '93. Both PDR and Genos Garage carry a '94-02 steering column gauge mount(2 1/16'', single) made by Autometer #15012, that TBP(tugboatphil) was able to mount on his '93 column, and referred me to for my 92. 5. It looks like it'll work. I'll let you know by the end of the week.

Philip,

For some reason, Tuggers tach fits... ... ... .

edit edit edit. .

I "think" I know why. He removed that long orange resistor from the back of the gauge. "IF" I recall correctly. He asked me which tach to buy and how to wire it so I had my "hands" in this to some degree.

Oh, he also has the light too :p LOL

Philip,

I didn't know it wasn't supposed to fit before I started. Being a Navy man, I "made" it fit. ;)

I can't remember everything (and I ain't EVER going to take it out of there) but I'm sure I removed the resistor, I cut the end off one of the mounting studs and I think I took off part of the mount backing bracket. But it fits all the way in there. So there is really only one of the mounting nuts holding the gauge in place.

I once had a landing craft that would hold 13 HumVees. We had 14 sitting on the beach, and I didn't want to make a return trip from the ship. We got the last one on. It required smashing the exhaust pipe on it, but it made the trip. I told all the Marines involved that they were NEVER to say that we got 14 onboard. They would have expected it every time after that.

EDIT - I forgot to give credit. Philip is the first person I saw that had this tach and pod combo.

ISSPRO also makes a cup that mounts nicely on the steering column. I got mine through Geno's Garage and the tach through a local ISSPRO dealer. Also, I used the oil pan bolt-on sensor and a couple of magnets on the vib damper. But then I have a 91. 5 with no plug-in harness…
