2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Where did you mount your Garmin GPS (II, II+, III, III+ or V)?

In my '94, the dash had a nice big, open spot with nothing going on that I mounted my RAM mount and GPS to. My 01. 5 has an ashtray, cig lighter and the shifter to contend with. I don't want to get it so far away that I have to struggle to touch/adjust it, or that I have to severly look away from the road to use it.



Currently, I have it mounted above the dash on a suction cup mount, but that I can't keep as permanent. I do have a power adapter cable to wire directly into the truck, and a remote mount antenna, so reception is not a problem.



Where have you guys/gals mounted yours?

Thanks guys. I really would like to get it out of line of sight though. Kinda like whatever Chris has mounted in front of his ashtray, but I need access to the ashtray as well.

Kieth, I suppose you could use the Ram Mount, and mount it some place on the lower knee bolster, or even the floor. They have many different types of mounting options and pedistals available.

Ashtray

My ashtray is still usable. The brake controller and ham radio control head are mounted to the ashtray. It still flips down fine.

The GPS is velcro mounted so I can see the map and trip data while driving, and easy to remove to put it out of sight when the truck is parked so it won't be so inviting to thieves.

Velcro'd my Garmin V to lip under the radio. It almost tucks in perfect there. Ended up having to contact cement the velcro on to the GPS & under the dash trim piece due to summer heat softening the original velcro adhesive.



Mounted a remote antenna on the dash way forward, close to the a-piller and you cant even notice it there. Receives nice.



The only bummer was had to cut 2 holes behind the GPS for the power & antenna wires, but did it in a way where when the gps is removed its covered by the velcro, and only cut slits in the velcro back there so you cant see the holes behind. Cant see it at all w/ the GPS in place.



Will take a pic tomorrow & attach it.



From the angle of the shots it looks slanted, but its not as slanted as it looks. Also, I like it better moved more left over the power outlet, but since I fried the lower outlet from running an air pump too long, I currently need access to the top one, so had to slide the GPS over. It will move back left when the bottom outlet is replaced.



This was originally just a temporary install for a trip, that is becoming more permanent that was originally intended. With some care, you can do a cleaner job than this...



Also you can see the remote antenna on the dash. Notice the reception is good as indicated on the signal screen.



GPS's are so cool. But a bigger, color display like on the streetpilot, and expandable memory would really improve usability.

I have a 12MAP (older, vertical type). I purchased a custom dash mount bracket from PanaVise and then attached the Garmin mount to that. I have no pictures, but this way I didn't have to mount it on top of the dash. It is angled right at me, just to the right on the radio, and it is far enough out that I can still use the cubby hole I have to the right of the radio.

Keith- I got one of the black non-velour dashmats and slapped a velcro strip on the bottom of my GPS. The whole dash becomes a GPS mount.

Ok. Personally I have the GPS so I can see my speed, AND look at the map...



On the dash, it is not blocking my vision, but is easy to look at and use.



Under the stereo or other assorted places will cause you to look down, inside the cab, away from the road to read them... and more importantly, to use the buttons.
