I want some beefy, yet reasonable to install tire chains for my 04 2wd.

Stock 265/70/17’s are on the pickup. I have heard of several people that cut down truck chains, which sounds like an OK idea, but I would like to know what brand and size of truck chain people have had success with.

Thanks!

Peter

I got a set from Tirechains.com. I got the Diamond quickfit they seem a little junky for the price. I wanted these because i can put them on without moving the truck (I will use only if i get stuck). I have 4wd and I plow with the truck on occasion i do not think these would last long with HD use. they do have other sets that might be better in you case

On the way elk hunting I got a good set at the NAPA store in Truckee,Ca reasonable like about $60. I couldnt find any around here at the last minute

I picked up some singles for a freight truck, only had to shorten them as the width was alright. Luckily I found them in the spring on top of a pass. Evidently the driver unhooked them, took a nap and drove off without picking them up. Just seen them sticking out from under a snow berm where a plow had pushed them.

Any more info out there?

The tirechains.com link is great, I will probably get a set of square link chains for my pickup.

I got mine at Checker (LaClede brand). Many/most are from China these days. Just be sure to get the ones with cross bars welded across each of the links that go across the tread--this style bites through the ice much better than plain cross links. Also be sure to get the rubber bands with hooks to keep the chains tight. My chains are for 255x85x16 tires and I may have to cut the plain end off shorter, to shorten them. The 265s on my 2004 have a smaller circumference. The other end has the hooks that grab the plain end. IMHO, price is sort of secondary. When you need chains, speed is also secondary. If you need to get "there" in such weather, you are just happy to get there eventually, and safely.
