I often have need for electrical wire in small quantities (usually under 50 ft). Sometimes I buy from McMaster, but their pricing might be a little high (plus I need to pay shipping).

Do any of you guys have a good source for wire?

Ryan

depends on what kind of wire i need. most of my wiring projects are done with household extension cable stuff. . that gives me 3 conductors [i use 12/3 most of the time]. for single wires, i either buy stuff from napa, home depot, princess auto or where it is on sale, or go shopping at work  for scraps.

I found a local shop that had 10/4 SOOW for $1. 21/ft and 8ga. stranded THHN for $0. 28/ft.

This seemed to be quite a bit less than I could find online. I guess I'll start using the local shops for wire. I just don't like the way you can't look at everything that's available and make a selection - you have to know precisely what you want, then you order it.

Until today I was using either McMaster or Waytek for my wire purchases.

I also use waytek. They have a lot to offer. I use them for all my electrical needs. switches and connectors and all that good stuff. -Jason

Parts store.

I have red and black in several guages, then a bunch of different colors in different guages. I just buy what I need before I start on a project and I usually have some left over.

I do the same with fuel line, air line, etc. If I need about 6 feet, I'll just buy 10 or 20 so I'll have some for another project down the road. :)

I like Del City also they have very nice products and at decent prices, but if you need and alliterative I also sell wire, ranging from Primary wire for the truck to trailer cable and even welding cable. Check it out at www.proweldperformanceparts.com My prices are cheaper then Del City.

I have to think you have some good electronics stores in Dayton. Not the Radio Shack types, they're worthless... but a real electronics store. I use everything from 26ga solid to 00ga. In Toledo, there has to a few, so I'd shop to see which has the best selection and price. Once you find the one you want, you'll never buy from anyone else.

Anything under #12 stranded, I'll pick up at an electronics store and I get it cut to length or sometimes buy the prespooled stuff if it's close. I get the color wire I want that way. Any larger quantities or gauges (500 foot length or #10 or bigger), I go to an electrical supply house. Most all do cash sales. CED/All-Phase is in Toledo; 2900 NORTH HOLLAND-SYLVANIA ROAD. Phone: 419-531-8000

Local Boat store has box's of take out harness, sell by the pound,

I get a big box and sort out the good stuff.....

I know, I'm cheap...

Probably the best of all is a place called Midwest Electronics Surplus. I almost always find treasure there. I could spend hours browsing.

But being surplus, their stock on wire is inconsistent, and on some jobs I need consistency.

I ended up at a local place called Beckers Electric. Big supply house apparently servicing many of the local electricians. They did very well by me. In fact, they screwed up and gave me double the length of wire I ordered and didn't charge me for it. When I called and told them their mistake, they said "keep it... Merry Christmas". They'll get my wire business from now on, and my recommendation to anyone who asks me where to buy wire. :)

At the risk of getting off topic here, I am generally disappointed in the availability of shop supplies here in the Dayton area. There aren't any really good tool shops, and it took me a long time to find a metals supplier. The metal supplier I did find deals mostly in structural steel for construction, so their selection of alloys and other metals seems to be limited.

Even things like paint shops are hard to find. I still haven't found an automotive paint shop that will mix a spray can for me based on the paint codes on my vehicles.

The vast majority of the shop equipment I buy comes from online sources. That's fine, except that some companies eat you alive on shipping. If there were a local McMaster-Carr warehouse I think I'd take a sleeping bag and move in there.

Home Depot for house wire (don't use much) and West Marine for automotive wire (pricey stuff but I won't use cheap wire on my truck or Jeep).
