Need suggestions from members as to where and who has a reliable shop to do some extensive modifications on my 1998. 5 24 valve with automatic 3/4 ton.

Want to up grade power/torque output, add exhaust brake, install 19. 5 rims & tires, and add Allison 6 speed auto trans.

We are now pulling a 27 ft. 5th wheel @ approximately 9000 GVW loaded and we want to up grade to something in the 13,000 to 14,000 range.

We currently live in Big Pine Ca. but have sold our house and are going full time RVing.

We plan on spending a month or more in Oregon during July and August and would really like to hear from anyone with suggestions as to reliable shops in Oregon.

Don-

Maybe you are more knowledgeable than I, but don't you mean a 5-speed Allison? If so, I'm not sure that I've even heard of this being done? I have heard of a manual conversion. Perhaps, you are better off just upgrading the transmission that you already have. Many have done so and pull much larger loads than you are talking about. I think that this is a more likely scenario or you really are looking for a specialty shop. Good luck,

you would be better off

with a DTT TC & VB transmission upgrade or just get some advice from the transmission "Guru"

Bills advice is always free and he expierience is second to none!

Enjoy the beautiful Pacific Northwest :)

I know it's not near Oregon, but I've got an idea you may have to go further away, but it might be worth while. East of Flint, MI there is a company called Vehicle Research and Development (VRD) that has made conversions such as you are looking for.

I saw a truck 10 years ago they built for GM with a 5. 9 and an Allison 6 speed as a test unit. They also do many other very interesting things for the auto makers and for individuals. I don't have a number, but they were a Banks dealer at the time and did the turbo conversions for GMC when they offered a 6. 2 turbo diesel option in 89, 90, and 91 (before the 6. 5)

And yes there is a 6 speed Allison. it can be found in many mid size trucks.

I got to know them when my '90 diesel suburban was delivered to the dealer without the turbo. After a 3 month wait for the truck I elected to drive it back to Flint for the turbo, rather than take a chance letting it go back by rail. I figured there wasn't much of a chance getting it back in one piece after a ride on an empty tri-level.

These guys were great to work with, and had me out the door in one day. :D :D :D

I meant to merely point out the practicality of the conversion-a medium duty transmission in a light duty truck? Well maybe that's what was thought when they first suggested the Cummins!? Cool.

Not intended to throw stones ---- 6 speed (called the World Transmission) is a great transmission A little overkill, but so is most of what we do in the name of improvement.

If you want it, can afford it, why not do it!

What is his name ?

There is someone on this board (or was) who works in a pump shop in Oregon. I think he is/was a moderator on a forum. Can't remember his handle , though. H e certainly sounded like the shop you are looking for. :D

Are you thinking of Power Wagon? Mark used to work at Wentland Diesel(?) near MiltonFreewater... just north of Pendleton. If he is the one, he is still a moderator.

Yes, that would be who I was thinking of.

Thanks.

Shops in Oregon

Not sure if they would do all that your asking for but R & J Machining and Engine Parts in Molalla, OR has a pretty good reputation on 12 valve stuff. The owner was a Cummins Tech for years.

Might be worth a call @ 503/829-6038.

Good luck and enjoy you stay.

I live In OR, but I get my work done in Redding. These guys are very good and I would look them up ask for Joel.

Tell them Mike sent you from Medford.

The Allison 6-speed auto isn't used in light duty trucks for a reason: IT WON'T FIT. The thing is HUGE. That's why the Allison 1000 5-sp was created, and even it was so big that GM had to make the heavy duty trucks bigger than the regular ones.

I'm not even sure the Allison 1000 will fit in our trucks, at least not without a body lift and some serious tunnel modifications. I expect such a conversion would cost at least $10,000 including the transmission, if not more (and more would be likely).

I suggest you contact Wentland Diesel Service. .

www.wentlanddiesel.com

Or 800-822-3875.

They've been setting up RV tow rigs for quite some time.

Oh, and, welcome to Oregon :) There's some absolutely wonderful sightseeing and rv'ing to do here :)

I'd say Wentland Diesel. They did all the work on my truck. They'll assess your needs, will give you options and won't sell you anything you don't need. First Class down to earth folks.

Besides, this is a great part of the world to visit.

Mid-state, check out Oregon Fuel Injection, Inc. in Eugene. If they ain't got it, they know where to get it.

Dont Bother with the Oregon Fuel Injection in Medford. When I was first looking around (before i knew about TDR) they wanted to charge me $35. 00 to install a VA. And $700 for and 4" exhaust.
