I need to upgrade my computer.

Wheres the best place to shop on the net?

I dont need a barn burner just need to get out of a P1-166

running win 95

Thanks,

Have you picked up a Computer Source magazine lately? There's a buch of shops advertized in there, and 3 or 4 of them are in Southcenter.

I use Computer Sonics for almost all of my computer stuff. They're just south of SouthCenter. They have some good deals on "bare bones" upgrades -- case, power supply, motherboard, memory, CPU. Move over your cards and hard drive, and you're set. AMD 1GHz with 512Mb RAM would run about 300 + tax.

Although, If I was taking such a big step (from a P5-166 & W95), I'd take a close look at your hard drive size, and the cards inside that you intend to keep. For a little more money, you could get one of their complete PCs -- Hard drive, killer video, fast CD drive, and Windows 98/XP pre-installed. AMD 1GHz with 512Mb RAM, 20Gb drive runs about $500. They'll do custom builds, if there's something else you want/don't want on the box.

Oh, and if I can run my mouth a little more, upgrade your monitor, too. A decent 19" is about $200 right now -- and that's the part of the computer you use the most. If you need help, drop me a note, I can lend a hand.

I recommend you trying www.ubid.com. They auction surplus new and refurbished equipment for many companies.

I bought a Hp Kayak from them about 20 months ago. This one originally listed for over $3200 and I got it for a quarter of that. It was one of four of this particular model that was being surplused off due to new models taking it's place. It was new and still in the HP sealed box. It came with a 3 year warranty, with the first year being on site.

I have bought this computer, 4 scanners, 3 printers, and several other items from Ubid. Ubid is the auction division of PC Mall. My only caution to you in dealing with them is to pay attention to the shipping means and cost. When I got my computer from them shipping was very reasonable, but in looking at their site lately I have noticed that the shipping is higher.

Check them out.

A good site to compare prices is www.pricewatch.com.

Good luck and hope this helps!
