Sorry for the stupid question... The guy I bought the truck from said he has a service manual on CD that he'd find and send me, so I haven't bought one yet. I guess I shouldn't wait any longer... .

Anyway, he gave me a new oil pressure sender with the truck. I can't find where it goes! Either it's somewhere hidden on the driver's side rear of the block, or he gave me the wrong sender, 'cuz I sure can't see anything like this on the engine. The new sender is a GP Sorenson brand. I know it's not as good as a real Cummins part, but it was free, so I'll use it as long as it lasts.

Any help locating it or a photo of the right sender will be greatly appreciated... .

thanks

kevin

I'm feeling even more stupid...

Just looked at the repair guide at AutoZone.com and found the attached picture. I guess I'll have to look again at the truck, because the sender seems to be in plain view behind the PS pump, and the photo of the part on AutoZone.com looks like the part I have.

Sorry for the wasted BW...

No bandwidth wasted, because I can warn you before you break another part changing it.

First, the job will be done easiest with a crow's foot open-end wrench, a long extension and a ratchet. Work through the spring, next to the shock absorber.

You will probably find a brass adapter behind the sensor. When you change the sensor, put a little sealant on the adapter's threads and install it first. Then put some sealant on the sensor and install it. If you do it t'other way 'round, you may well crack the adapter trying to get it all tight enough, and that might cause gentlefolk within earshot to faint.

No it's not in plain sight. The picture forgot to put the Injection Pump over the top of it and a few wires and some other things. I am at a lose about an adaptor. On my 97 the sender just screws into the block. (no adaptor)

Oh, OK. My '98's got a brass adapter that came out with the sensor. I think it's about a 1/8" NPT to 1/4" NPT, or something like that.

Thanks, guys! I've seen other posts about the adapter, and was pleased to find I don't have one either. As for working thru the spring, you must have a 4x4. Mine's 4x2, and a 1-1/16" socket, u-joint and extension did the job from under the hood.

edit: oh yeah, I guess in the drawing, the injection pump was removed for clarity... :p

My oil light is now off!

Thanks again!
