It is inside the transmission, integrated with the governor pressure sensor, I believe you have to remove the pan to get at it.

illflem..... is this the same sensor that could be making my engine surge 200 rpm intermittently? the dealer checked the tps when they did the recall for the throttle linkage and the voltage was ok. thanks. scott.

I don't think the transmission temp sensor will casue any kind of a surge.

What was the TPS voltage? It may test within parameters while sitting in the shop, but while driving down the road you may get some variance. Enough to cause a slight engine surge.

Try cleaning the TPS. Quite often times this helps.

At what speed do you get this surge? With OD on or off? I assume it is the TC unlocking/locking, is this correct?

In some very rare instances I have heard the brake pedal will loosen up. If it is too loose it will "tap" the brakes while driving down the road. Just a tap on the brake will cause the TC to unlock and give you the change in RPM.

What was the TPS voltage? - . 8 and 3. 55...

At what speed do you get this surge? above about 1500rpm... . With OD on or off? both... .....

I assume it is the TC unlocking/locking, is this correct? i'm not sure, this is my first diesel.

thanks. scott.

Definitely sounds like TC locking/unlocking.

The TPS can be cleaned without removing it (I personally prefer to take mine off to clean it, but I am a little anal about things :) )

You need some electrical contact cleaner. It comes in a spray can, and you can get it at Home Depot or probably any hardware store. All you need to do is spray the cleaner on/in the side of the TPS that the throttle linkage fits into while working the throttle back and forth.

If you don't have a multimeter to check adjustment, do not remove the TPS for cleaning.

This link may provide you with a little insight if you do decide to take it off: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/automatic/TPS_adjust.htm

well, the electronic cleaner didn't work. no effect.

in step 7 from the link, it says to tighten the screws but nowhere previous to that does it say to loosen them. what's up? have you made this adjusment before? thanks. scott.

Try holding the brake pedal up with your foot. You mentioned in your email that a few of the surges took place while traveling over bumps. If the pedal has loosened up and is falling tapping the brake enough to unlock the TC, this could be your problem.

Your TPS voltage is OK, it doesn't need adjustment. If cleaning it while on the truckdidn't help, it is unlikely that taking it off will help.

Try holding the up on the brake first, and let us know.

I have the problem with the brake pedal. If I'm running the cruise and hit a bump it coasts and I gotta hit resume. Is this a sign of a bad brake switch or is there a return spring or adjustment on the pedal?

Chris

If I remember correctly there is an adjustment for the amount of tension on the pedal.

If you'd like I can check in my '96 service manual that may shed some more light on this.

I had that problem with my '95, Ihad to hold the brake pedal up with my left foot. A dealer adjusted something and no more problems. He did say if that didn't work I might need a new master cylinder. That was about 40K mi ago.

I also took my TPS off to clean it, it only takes 10 min if you do it enough- I finally broke down + got a new one.

Good Luck

Frank
