The service manual shows it to be in the upper hose. There is also a smaller bypass hose attached to the therm. housing.

Good luck.

Got it..... Thanks for the info... Intake manifold heater is still not kicking on... now its time to diagnose that one.

Its not that bad to change you have to pull the alternator though..... I would put the original heat range in it,and I went to cummins and got one even though I work at an auto parts store I dont like the aftermarket stats..... Rick

I agree on the aftermarket stats for the cummins. I used one and had to pull it back out because it would hang on it's first cycle then work fine. Not a bad job to change out either.

I got the one from NAPA... . Part # 370-180... it is a 180° thermostat, and it does hang on to its first cycle, but after that it is ok... . I get a major discount at NAPA for working for the city... That really helps out when it is time to do maintenance on the truck!

My experience is somewhat different. I used the "New Trick" Cummins stat and it never got over 160 deg so changed it out for a NAPA # 370-180 and it seems to work fine and is $8 VS $22 from Cummins. You dont have to pull the alternator, just remove the bolt in the stat housing and loosen the bottom one and push it out of the way, it doesnt have to move a whole lot.

I just removed my Napa stat. I used it for all of two days. Mine would occasionally hang up. It would sometimes take four or five cycles before working properly.

Unless you're replacing the hoses, don't remove any of them. Remove the serpentine belt, remove the top alternator bracket and the three bolts holding on the thermostat housing. It'll take longer to drain a gallon or two of coolant than to actually replace the thermostat. When draining, leave the radiator cap fully tightened. Attach a hose to the petcock to avoid any spills for Fido. A 5/16" hose works great. Leaving the radiator cap in place allows the system to draw the water out of the overflow tank and most importantly it will drain most of the antifreeze in the upper hose. This will facilitate cleanup.

Cats like Prestone!!!! That's fine with me!!!! Haha, Just kidding. I am highly allergic to cats, and thought I would make a little humor.

Bypass Hose

A friend of mine has a 96 ctd and he put a on/off valve in his bypass hose and in the winter time he just it opens the valve a little bit and he said when his truck warms up alot quicker and does not cycle as much. Does the temperature have to flucuate on a cummins for any certain reason? If it would hold at 190* the engine would be alot more fuel efficent. Thanks for the replys!!!Oo.
