This last weekend one of our campers locked his keys, both sets in his trailer. Good thing we had a 7 year old with us that could fit through the laundry shoot in the basement compartment.

Good idea to to stash that third set some where you can get to it, if this happens to you.

I have alway kept a key hidden somewhere on my car and truck where I can reach it and is not obvious to others. That key will unlock my door. I then have a chipped key hidden in the car and truck. Never had to use them yet, knock on wood.

I lost my one set of camper keys last summer, camped all summer never locked the camper:) But its a 1999 tent trailer so no big deal. We keep the valuables on us at all times.

I keep a copy of every key we use hidden in my truck. I do this after getting to a CG one time and figuring out we had no door key to the TT (thankfully it was open) so we couldn't lock the door while we were out and about.

Glad to hear that your taking precautions and your not left out in the cold. HA HA

I have to make sure that when my wife unlocks the camper that the door is unlocked and not re-locked when opened, and then the door get shut. I've had it happen before, and that is what happened to my friend,--and we were outside. Now my keys are in my pocket all the time.

I have seen kids lock themselves in campers, really makes the "I only lock the camper with keys" statement mute. I have a key hidden on the outside of my camper, and my truck as well. Easy to access spots, but nothing too obvious.

The way I see it, if someone wants your truck they are going to take it. So I hide the key in a spot that is not obvious but not difficult.

Does your 05 have a chipped key? I didn't think mine did.

I keep a spare set of camper keys in the truck. There is a truck key in a magnetic holder hidden under the truck and I keep a spare truck key in my wallet. The key in my wallet has the end you hold on to ground down just enough to hold on to so you can turn it.

Another way to lock yourself out: My brother has a 30' motorhome with electric door locks controlled by a panel next to the drivers seat. He travels with cats! He was at a rest area taking a break and left the keys in the MH since he was just going to walk around the vehicle. One of the cats stepped on the door switch and locked him out. Cat refused to repeat the trick and let him in. He didn't have a spare key and had to break in.

A couple of years ago I was working on my truck and disconnected both batteries like a good boy should. As soon as I connected the first battery i heard a familiar "thunk".

Yep, it was the electric door locks locking my keys in the truck.

I don't understand how you can lock your keys in the camper. My camper can only be locked from the outside with a key... It has a door handle lock that only operates from the outside with a key and it has a deadbolt that can be locked by someone on the inside or with a key from the outside...

However, when my youngest was 2, I was bar-b-queing dinner with me on the outside and her on the inside watching a movie. My wife and older child were at the campground pool about a 1/4 mile away...

I was outside and I heard some foot steps come to the front door and then I heard a "click". My heart dropped and I checked my pockets... All keys were in the camper, including the truck keys.

I had to talk her into opening the door by turning the red latch the other way. It took about 5min and alot of praying... but she did it!

Alot of things go thru your mind during those 5 minutes... starting with "what a dumbxxx I am for leaving the keys in the camper"

Both my friend's kids have locked them out of the rv. The first my youngest was able to squeeze in through one of the windows. The second time they got junior to open the door again.

Another time I came out of the store and realized I had locked my truck key in the truck. No problem as I kept a spare key for that truck in the trailer plug housing. As I started getting my key out I heard done cussing and turned around just in time to see another guy getting a spare key out of his trailer plug housing. I don't keep a key there anymore.

I now keep a spare truck key in one of the magnetic boxes tucked into a cross member. It'll open the door but won't start the truck.

My trailer can only be locked from the outside with a key, so I'm worried about losing them, rather than locking myself out. My wife and I split the keys. When we leave the house for a trip, I take a set of both truck and trailer keys and she does too. That way if either one of us locks their set in the truck or loses them, the other has another set.
