Heading south from Bay Area,

Where is the best places to fill up (100 gals +) On from Stocton,Hwy 5 to Palmdale and hwy 10 @ Palmdale to Mesa AZ.

You guys are great last trip I saved 10 cents per gal from your tips.

Thanks, Bill

There is a Flying J in Phoenix at exit 137 - 67th avenue. That will probably be the cheapest in the Valley if you can pull up to the RV pumps. There is also one right at the border of California at Exit 1.

I have driven that route several times. Try to get into Arizona for most of your fuel. The price posted in Az is for trucks. RVs pay 6 or 7 cents less. I have traveled the USA several times and you will not beat Flying J if you use the RV Pumps, not the truck pumps. I found Gorman, Ca pretty good.

I have a 110 gal capacity so you need to get a bank loan to fill up at todays prices.

jacqnbill yes I will wait till AZ as fuel around was 2. 77/gal for diesel

I know what you mean about a bank loan to fill up as I have a 70 in bed tank and my 35 gal stock tank last time I filled up it was 94 gals. But on the up side I always try to fill up away from home as fuel is cheaper. This site is great to get the latest skinny on where to fuel up.

So it sounds like I will just watch the fuel prices along the hwy around Gorman but wait till AZ to fuel up.

Thanks Bill

We took 101 South from Alameda so we could stop at Camping World. From there we went East out of Gilroy thru Los banos over to 99. We stopped at Flying J north of Bakersfield, the Flying J part way up the grapevine on I5, and continjued east and stopped at every Flying J we saw. It gave us good prices, and a break to hit the head and relax. It works for us. We are now in the Phoenix area. We will continue east stopping at Flying J whenever we see one.

In Arizona you can use the truck pumps if it's less busy. The only catch, you need to go inside to get your tax refunded. Sometimes a pain, but the Flying J RV pumps at the Arizona border are always busy so the truck pumps are usually the way to go.

I have found that at many of the AZ “big” truck fueling islands that if you FIRST call the fueling desk from the phone at the island that the clerk will adjust the price (they can verify that you are an RV by the camera) on the pump to the Car/RV price.

For those that don’t know, big trucks in AZ are charged $0. 08/gal more for state tax than Car/RV diesel.

However in Oregon, big truck diesel tax is $0. 24/gal less (only for PUC permit holders) At the ID/OR border you will see signs advertising a cheep diesel fuel price in OR. When driving on the I’state you won’t have time to read the PUC permit disclaimer. Don’t get caught in their scam and be surprised at the pump price when filling up.

May you have fair winds and following seas!

Unless you are going into LA for a reason, I would avoid going straight down I-5. Personally, I would cut over to 99 and across 58 towards Barstow. Before getting to Barstow, you will come to Kramer Junction(intersection of hwy 58 and hwy 395). Go south on 395 to reach I-15. South on I-15, break off to the 215 south, then south to I-10. It saves a bunch of distance/time/and hassle. Its also a major trucking route, so ther are filling stations all along there. I hate to say this, but try to avoid Mojave for fueling. The station on the north end of town is known(locally) for having BAD fuel. Its called Oasis. The PennySavers truck stop is okay(I guess, I always fuel at the CFN station).
