We are planning two weeks vacation in July and looking at coastal Oregon. I'm bringing the wife, 2 and 6 y/o boys and the aussie dog. We have a 26' trailer that is self contained. I'm more interested in beautiful places to stay than a site with hookups. (a site with both would be nice) Fishing and hiking are important. Day trips with the truck are a given. Any suggestions as to nice campgrounds or don't miss spots would be appreciated. The sergeant major likes pine tree forests but I'm happy with just getting out of town.

Most any of the OR state parks are good & there are a lot on the coast & most have full hookups. You can call the Oregon Tourism Commission at 800-547-7842 & they will send you info to their state parks. One state park we like is the Valley of The Rogue state park exit 48 I believe on I-5 at Grants Pass. While at Grants Pass you will want to take the jet boat ride up the Rogue River. These are not small jet boats, they hold about 30 people or more. Great ride & scenery. Valley of the Rogue SP has full hookups. I would advise that you make reservations at any SP that you stay at. Hopes that this helps.

We spent a week at Fort Stevens and had a great time. Besides numerous beach's they have miles of paved walking and biking trails, the fort itself to explore and if thats not enough, the city of Seaside is nearby with lots more to do. The campground is really nice and the hookups have been updated. There are only a few full hookup sites so book early if thats important.

At least make a stop at Humbug Mountain State Park just south of Port Orford. It's close enough to Gold Beach to take a day trip up the Rogue River on the Mail Boats - the 36 mile trip stops up river at some resorts, where a very nice rest and lunch is available - beautiful wild river scenery - sorta like this:

At the park, old Hwy 101 can be hiked to a point way above the CG, and provides an excellent ocean and park view - the CG has water and electric, and a dump station near the entrance.

We've vacationed there for 50 years - we love it, and so did our kids - and now our grand kids. Other than that, as said further above, the Oregon coast has MANY great camping areas - you WON'T be disappointed!

There are plenty of great places to stay on the Oregon coast. One of my favorites is Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, near Florence, Oregon. It's a great place for kids with trails through the park that lead to the sand dunes and to a fresh water lake for swimming. Take a look here: http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_134.php

Another is Beverly Beach State Park, near Newport, Oregon. Here is their site: http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_227.php

Ft. Stevens State Park, near Astoria, Oregon is another good place. Here is their site: http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_179.php

Now here is the bad news... Most of these parks are on a reservation system and they are pretty much booked solid in the spring and summer. This is especially true for "full hookup" sites. If you don't need full hookups you may find a place.

There are a couple of good commercial sites that you can look at. One is "The RV Resort At Cannon Beach," and another is "Cape Kiwanda RV Resort" in Pacific City. These probably aren't the best places if you want to do a lot of "four wheeling. " The best place for this is Honeyman. Lots of dunes to play in. You can go to the "Trailer Life" website and look for others. Have fun... ;)

We just left Harris Beach State Park on the north edge of Brookings. Very nice. Easy walk to the beach, and some sites have cable TV and WIFI for only $18 a night this time of year!

HEY, good info - been a few years since we've stayed there - sounds like they've made some improvements! It's always been a very nice park - and Brookings has a neat old town section for the tourists with a few extra $$$ to dispose of... :-laf :-laf

Don't forget Astoria, Or. ( the mouth of the Columbia River). Great campiong & fishing. And just a "stones throw" away from Lwaco, Wa.

You're family will love it... . Steve

I don't think anyone has mentioned Coos Bay. Excellent place.

Yea Sunset Bay is nice. We prefer Oceanside rv park Charleston. It's a private park, no trees but it's full hookups & cable. The beach is right over a small dune & I can let the dog run loose on the beach.

Have to agree with ya on Humbug... ... Full Hook-ups in a beautiful close to the beach setting! Make sure ya hit "The Crazy Noreigan" for lunch!!

Wow. Great response everybody. I just finished the workweek which means I haven't checked this thread for several days. Gary: Nice pics of Humbug Mountain State Park/Rogue River. I have a friend that retired from my work to Port Orford. We plan on visiting her while in the area. These responses gives me good information to plan our trip. Jeff: Do those races start after the kids go to sleep? :-laf
