Where to drill and tap?

Which place would be better to put the probe for a pyrometer? I don't have a right angle drill and I don't want to take the manifold off, so I can't put it right next to the turbo. So which of these is a better option, or if you have any other suggestions please feel free to let me know.

Most of the installs that I have seen, including mine, were just drilled from the top side right before the manifold turns down towards the turbo. Basically either A or B, just more up on the top side than down on the side.
 
I drilled mine where you have the "B" not where you have the dot. You can use a regular hand drill and drill straight down into the top of the manifold. I believe Diesel Power Products has some good instructions on their web site in the gauge section.

Drill a little to the right of the letter B, just to the left of #3 port entering the log. Drill on the side of the log, just above the seam. Easy to do with a regular drill and bit. Almost all chips fall outside onto the towel you put under it. Fish the rest out with a magnet on a stick.
 
Well, I had heard that the 4,5, and 6 cylinders ran hotter, but I don't know why? Thats why I ask. I'm not set on putting exactly where the dot is, but I am more interested in where it would be best. And if there is anything I should worry about drilling into.
 
I would avoid, if possible, drilling into that curved part of the manifold. Too easy to screw up with a hand drill. Just my opinion, I prefer to do that sort of work on a drill press where you can be sure you're at 90 degees. ;)
 
Well, I don't intend to get into a debate on the subject - but a number of past threads have pretty well pointed out that torn down engines quite often display substantially MORE signs of heat related issues on the rear cylinders - and those are certainly the ones *I* would want to monitor most closely and have done so as much as possible on my own installation...
