The subject line pretty much says it all.

One idea I was considering: I was wondering whats behind that tissue box thingy that would be a cupholder in an automatic. I was wondering if there is room behind it and I could cut a hole in the top rear of it and mount the radio brackets to the top of the box. The back of the radio would stick through the rear of the box and it would be mounted horizontally.

I'm open to other ideas too. Thanks.

Don't know what kind of radio your looking for, but the Cobra 75WXST can be mounted under the drivers seat, with all the controls in the mic... ;)

The Cobra 75WXST is a great unit and really can be mounted anywhere... I put mine on the floor plastic that surrounds the gear shifter and threaded the wiring under that plastic! I realize that is very vague but I'm at a lost of technical words for that location! Basically down by the shifter! Also you may want to check www.Galls.com They have some great mounting stuff if you have a CB already.

I used Mike Brolin's mount and would highly recommend it. It was reasonably priced and fit well and made the job very easy. I debated for months where to put the CB and never llike any place I thought of until I saw Mike's advert -- problem solved! Also, since my CB is a small unit, I had a place to mount the toggle switch for the two additional back-up lights I mounted under the rear bumper. My '97 is a 5 speed and I switch on these lights when hooking/unhooking my trailer at night and the truck can be left running.

The Brolin Mount is pretty cool. But I'm a cheapskate and did a poor boy mount. I used an L bracket I found laying around, and modified my center dash cover. That's a Cobra 25WTX CB if your wondering.

I recently mounted a Premier 400A linear under the center seat. Man does that little radio talk now :D!

While the Brolin mount is quite nice, I don't care for the position it puts the radio in. You see I had made my own version of the Brolin mount on my last truck (long before I knew anyone even sold such a bracket) and had it mounted more-or-less vertically between the center seat and shift. Being the slob that I am, the radio was always scuzzy with splashed coffee and soda (I can blame my high mounted drink "catapult" for most of that though) with a nice crust of various crumbs fastened to it. Due to the frequent cleanings I eventually wiped the silk screened print right off the face of the radio (twice in fact - I had to replace the first faceplate) on my POS Cobra 29+.

As far as the Cobra radio with all the controls on the mike, I already have one of those up on the shelf in the garage, though it should be in the garbage. I've had several Cobras and they were all junk.

I am probably going to order a Cherokee CM-10+ today. Its only 6" deep. Gizmo looks like he did exactly what I had in mind.

Gizmo,

Did you cut a hole to slip the back of that radio through?

CumminsPower98,

I also thought of putting it up on the ceiling. What is above the headliner to screw into?

Royk,

There are two layers of metal up there so if you are real careful you can drill through the first one and use some real short screws. I don't have specs on how long they are. You can get a feel for the distance with the drill bit. I have had the radio up there for almost a year now and it has held fine. I ran the power cord up the a-piller and behind the headliner coming out where the two little center lights are. The antena wire is run up the passenger side rear cab corner behind the trim and then comes out as you can see it. I didn't want to make a hole that big in the headliner for it.

No, actually I removed the entire plastic backing. A screwdriver works wonders for that little sucker. It just pops out. I'll try to get more pictures of the bracket and mount if you want them.

I have a 5 speed 4x4 and I mounted mine with the front of the radio facing up on the driver's side of the plastic gear shift housing down close to the floor. I have a Cobra 29WXNWST which is a fairly good sized radio. I have to reach down a little to mess with the dials but the face is readable. I have an external speaker that I haven't figured out where I want to mount yet. To mount the radio I just held the bracket that came with the radio up against the housing and drilled two holes through the plastic housing. It seems to be fairly solid and believe it or not, I haven't kicked it yet. I like the location fairly well. I have the bottom of the radio facing the driver's feet and the top obviously toward the gear shift housing. I works well for me. Just another idea.

I have mine on the outside of the "tissue box". I simply drilled holes through, put a bracket on the back (I don't trust the strength of the plastic) and used a standard mounting bracket on the outside. The biggest thing is, put it in 5th gear and measure it first. It is a close fit between the shifter and the glove box, but my Uniden fits just fine. :D
