Where does everyone recommend taking an oil sample (for analysis) from? I know Amsoil and others sell the pump that pumps oil out of your dipstick tube, but for as often as I would use it, that seems like a waste. When I change my filter can I just take some oil out of there? Any thoughts??
 
I have been getting samples from the drain when I change the oil. I was worried about contamination at first, but haven't had any of the readings come out extra high or vary much. I bought a ball valve drain in place of my OEM plug. Fumotovalve.com or Geno's Garage. Hope this helps, Tony.
 
we pull them from the drain plug on everyone we do and have not had any contamination issues, and we do about 20 a week.
 
The Key is to always take from the same location. I take mine from the outlet of my by pass filter, which is convient for me.

Ever wonder why your wear metals are low on your reports? It's because you're checking the efficiency of the filter. Proper 'wear analysis' for an engine would be to take a sample coming out of the engine BEFORE any filters. Taking the smaple after teh bypass is basically verifying the oil going back into the engine but would not indicate / catch any mechanical wear issues as the 1/2 micron filter is trapping any particles.
 
There are 2 ports on the amsoil dual remote bypass. 1 filtered one not. Lookin at the end opposite the hoses the left port is not filtered. So as long as his sample valve is in the correct hole its OK.
 
That's a neat feature - I wonder how many owner's of that filter are aware of it?

Oil analysis is a trend wear analysis and is useful if the same engine is sampled over a period of time, at teh same location to obtain multiple oil analysis. The trend helps detect problems when they are in an 'infant' stage rather than fatal stage. Too many users try to use oil analysis to 'justify' using a type / brand of oil. Routine trend oil analysis is best used to verify the proper operation of the fueling system, cooling system, air filter system - and then the condition of the oil. IMHO, too many users get this reversed.
