Timing rattle

2003 2500 Crew long bed, Raptor pump, Smarty S-06 POD setting 5 3.73 gears. The truck runs out of power and will not pull past 80. What (if anything) is wrong with the truck or is this because of the gear?

Black smoke when running out of power? Mice in airbox aka air filter condition.

Plugged fuel filter - check condition of fuel for water or gasoline smell. Boost leaks, exhaust leaks? Trans slipping? Any codes?

You didn't happen to set the speed limiter low?

Plugged fuel filter - check condition of fuel for water or gasoline smell. Will change filter

Boost leaks, exhaust leaks? 30 psi
Trans slipping? Nope
Any codes? Nope

You didn't happen to set the speed limiter low? Nope I have it set to 150

But first I would verify the lift pump is still working. I can hear the Raptor pump working

As said above, Check primary fuel pressure preferably while running at the speed or RPM that the truck starts to fade out.

Speed doesn't mean a lot if rpms are maxxed out. What are you running for rpms at 80 mph? Has it really quit accelerating or did the speedometer just quit rising?

What transmission do you have? Are you actually in high gear? What is boost and rail pressure doing at the point you think it is shutting down?

Not a lot to go on with "it only goes 80 mph", need a lot more info about what is happening at that point to even formulate a guess.

You are right if he is against the governed speed of the engine. My thought was at high speeds, the engine is loaded more than just bringing the engine up to top speed unloaded thus using more fuel. Just looking for something for him to check and either say it is fine (Fuel pressure) or not.

I have no idea how to check fuel pressure on this thing sorry. I'm not sure what other info you need, I didn't get a lot of info when I got it. I have posted what I know. The Smarty is currently on level two and it is getting 15.7 mpg, which is down from the 16.7 it was getting on level five.

This is literally all I know about the mods done to the truck...
2003 2500 Crew long bed, Raptor pump (Previous owner), Smarty S-06 POD setting 5 (Me) 3.73 gears (Dodge)

More and more wish I had gotten a 2002 or older truck.

What transmission? At some point you will probably need to look at thing slike boost, rail pressure, etc. Hard to diagnose issues with some type of gauge readings. An app to read the available pids willl be the easiest and cheapest to implement.

Just for information, it goes stock from factory easy to 100mph and beyond, even on an incline.
So yes, your truck does not work a it should.

Next problm is you dont know exactly the past of the vehicle, there are so many molested truck out there it's a shame.

Easiest would be go on a Dyno, then we know how much is left from stock.

Go to parts store and see if you can pull up any codes. You can get a wifi obd2 and free app for your phone that does this too. As mentioned above, more parameters need to be known. It is absolutely not the gearing. It could be fueling issues, trans issues, or as simple as a speed sensor at the trans or diff.

Does it smoke when started cold? Does it smoke when this problem occurs? If smoke then what color? Any noises out of the ordinary (loud rattle like an old 12 valve or ticking)? Any raw diesel smell? Will it go past 80 mph on a good downhill? That might tell a lot. Does it pull strong until 80?

My Smarty pulls codes, there are none.

No cold smoke
No smoke on acceleration past a short black blip then its clean
No noises
No raw diesel
No idea, Indiana is pretty flat
Pulls ok but not what I know from turned up P-pumps
