I was thinking of installing a exhaust temperature gauge on my Dodge and was wondering where the best location for the temperature probe would be- should it be placed in the exhaust manifold before the turbo or after the turbo?

John,

I just mounted my EGT probe this weekend. I put it in the manifold, just before the turbo. I think this is the most accurate place to monitor the EGT from because this is where it is the hottest. Sure, it is a lot more work to mount it here (removal of turbo, etc. ) but this is the best place to keep an eye on your EGT. Just be sure to use a vacuum cleaner to suck out all of the metal shavings when you drill your hole in the manifold... the turbo doesn't like metal shavings. FYI, your EGT's in the exhaust elbow after the turbo will be roughly 300-375 degrees cooler that in the manifold.

Hope this helps!!!

Well, guess i can't tell you the best place. just the place when most of trucks have them. appox 3-5" from the back of the turbo. In your kit it should have a location stated . in 12 years working for Cummins I've never drilled an exhaust manifold ---but, i'm still learning. You will get a higher temp reading in the exhaust manifold,

I installed mine before the turbo as per the instructions, from TST, the magnet removed to my satifaction the metal shaveings. I think this is the best place to get a acurate reading. My . 02 cents Tom F.

Scott!!!

Good to see you again! I finally got my TDR number and stuff after waiting a long time for it. It's great to be back on the Board after being off for so long. I was getting sick of just reading and not posting. Well, I got the "Scotty Air System" in my 98. 5 now, and I must say, this is the best way to do it. Thanks for the great idea.

Were you the one who was selling the 275 HP injecors for a good price? If so, email me... I aam VERY interseted!!!

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the information. I think I'll go with either a Autometer or VDO gauge ( I used to fly ultralight airplanes with Westach gauges and was not happy with their longevity).

Hmm. Pasword Work?

Right on it works. I have the Autometer pyrometer installed in the manifold on my pickup. Very happy with the guage. It seems very responsive to the EGTs. More so than tat of the Banks guage. I think it is because of the probe sizes. The auotmeter is very tiney while the banks is very short and fat. I have tried two different guages thinking the first had a problem. I guess as the saying goes"it not the size, but how ya use it.
