I have a question for a friend with a 2001 Cummins 24V with A/T: he has an erratic oil pressure gauge and was considering replacing the sender. A shop told him that it was integral to the pump and in the end would cost him $800. 00 for the part alone. I'm a 12'er so I don't have ready resources. Anybody, where's the sender, what's a typical cost?? Many thanks.

The oil pressure sensor is is screwed into the left hand side of the engine block just below the ECM (Engine Control Module). Take a look at the attached drawing which is looking at the left side of the engine.

Even if he replaces the sending unit, he *may* still have erratic oil pressure readings because of the way the ECM treats momentary drop-outs in oil pressure sensor voltage. He may also need to have the ECM software updated (reflashed) to the latest version to eliminate this behavior. See the attached Tech Service Bulletin for more info.

A new oil pressure sensor is Dodge part number 5012991AD and it isn't cheap:

Currently $157. 55 from MoparPartsAmerica or $178. 79 from RockAuto.

Best regards,

John L.

There's a Cummins Northeast in Dedham. Get your engine serial number and call them. You might be surprised at the price they charge for oil pressure sensors. According to their website, contact Dan Seaver at 781-329-1750.
