Goodbye and Good Buys

Harrasment ?

It was a bit scary yesterday. My company announced to the business wire before they told the employees about 10% layoffs yesterday. We were all sweating it out. But, luckily (for me) I was not chosen. Lost some of my colleagues though:( I think I'll go fishing this weekend and relax a bit.

I know the feeling. We did about 10% on Tuesday. I'm still here, but we lost some good people.

Someday the telecom market will have to turn around... .

A buddy of mine has been at Boeing for 21 years in Washington area. He may be taking a furlough if the hourly go on strike. He has sweated middle management lay-offs. Like they say in "AA", "One Day At A Time". Hope they need you more than their best guy. Hang in there. Chris

Had some corperate email go out a while back where it sounded like we will be doing layoffs. They have also been doing some shutdowns of the company. I know that I've got the week of Thanksgiving off right now, and possibly two weeks for Christmas/New Years. It doesn't sound like the semiconductor industry is going to turn around anytime soon.

The whole chip industry is scary now. I work for Applied Materials, and it looks like something big is about to happen (layoffs). I think my job is secure but you never know.

I feel for you guys, I worked 27+ years for AT&T and took the early retirement offer in 1998 (I was 49 at the time). Wasn't planning on retiring that young but could not pass it up (last of the good deals). It was getting rough watching the downsizing take place year after year. I still have no desire to get another job and I don't know if I ever will :( Guess I would rather be poor and stress free. It would be nice to find something that you liked to do with people you liked, you know something that paid well and did not seem like work. I wish you guys the best of luck, because that's what it is. Being in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time. I think that is why it is so stressful, you really don't have any control.

Pit Bull,

I was in the SAME situation as you with Bell Atlantic. I had 27 years of service in 96 and was offered an early retirement package. I really didn't want to leave that early but, like you, I was getting gun shy watching all of the down sizing in all departments.

I've been working as a contractor for Verizon for the past 5 years and we've been threatened with termination year after year. It's like I never left the telephone company. Same volitale policies,,, same threats.

It seems no matter where you live or what company you work for, we all eventiually are faced with the posibility of lay offs. Lets all hang in there as best as we can and see if by networking among each other, we can possibility help each other find new employment.

rmrc, it just wears you out, I loved my job, ( based on results I was good at it) I just got tire of wondering if I was going to get shot for no good reason. "POOR" :) and retired seems to be a better option. I'm just real lucky I had that option. I'm sure some day I will get off my butt and go back to work. My wife would like that :) Of course when I retired she also quit working and she doesn't want to go back to work either  Go figure

I'm in Semicon biz here too and will see if I make it through this weeks layoffs. Second one this year, quarterly shutdowns and a fab on the brink of extinction. This next one will likely leave a skeleton crew.
