Truck to trailer plug??

alot of people use a pullrite hitch, and have had alot of good luck although there are several occasions where the hitch has come apart, personal preference. I was an RV tech for several years and there several very good hitches, I use a B&W Companion and I Love it in my Mega cab, can almost make a true 90 with no cab interference. Very nice smooth hitch.

I chose a Pullrite over the others because of the way it grips the pin. The others have a clamshell type that the pin slides between. The Pullrite has a system that hooks around the pin. Once locked around the pin there is no way it can slip out. With the clamshells trailers have pulled out and been dropped on the truck beds. It happened with my dealer when he went to move my 5er with his truck with a

Reese in it.

Generally, the only reason a trailer pulls out of its hitch is operator error. Of course there will be the occasional mechanical malfunction, but typically a condition known as a high hitch causes this to happen. This is when the trailer is raised too high above the fifth wheel to make a secure connection. The kingpin barely engages the hitch jaws and they end up wrapping around the very bottom of the pin. This will enable the driver to move the trailer around a bit until more stress is put on the connection. It will then disconnect and fall into the bed. These failures can be avoided by the driver ensuring that the trailer is low enough that the hitch actually pushes it up a bit when sliding under it. Assuming that all the parts are working properly, this will make a secure connection between truck and trailer. After hooking up all the connections and visually ensuring the connection, a test pull with the trailer brakes on and the landing gear down all the way except for about 1/2 inch will tell right away if there is a good connection. If not, the trailer will fall back down on the gear, no damage done.

I used to know someone who dropped a 53' trailer loaded with soda because of a high hitch. He failed to double check the jaws on his tractor and managed to make it to a main road. As soon as he started up a steep hill, the hitch let go and the trailer pulled away and rolled down an embankment. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the trailer brakes came on. The driver was cited for not making a proper pretrip inspection.

Again, I know that mechanical failure can happen, but things like this are usually operator error.

I have always used PullRite and believe they are superior in quality. I have always owned heavy fifth wheels and find them great to deal with when trading vehicles and swapping hitch's.
