Two questions...

First, my Grandfather picks up his new 2002 CTD in the morning. Anyway, he is wanting to put a 'better than stock' air intake on his new truck for when he's towing his camp trailer (25' Nash, probably 10k lbs. loaded). I was explaining to him the importance of low EGT's and whatnot when pulling a heavy load up a long hard hill, and he wants to keep them low now. So, what should he put on there? This is the only trailer he pulls, and it usually gets pulled about once every two weeks, a minimum of 50 miles a shot. He doesn't drive hard, and isn't going to do any other BOMBing, except maybe gauges so he can know what's going on.

Second, is his "old" pickup, a 2001 CTD, which I am buying from him. He had the oil changed on the '01 yesterday for me, but didn't change the air filter... he figured that I was going to put a better one then stock on there, so he left it be... but, IT NEEDS ONE BAD, so I have to get something. I have my Edge Comp ordered, and someday plan on DDII's or III's. What route should I go for a good quality, high flow intake? Also, one that's not gonna break the bank right off... maybe just a good high flow filter? Are K&N's any good on these trucks? I've read that they can damage a sensor from the oil that comes off them.

Thanks for any help. Josh.

I use a Psychotty 1, soon to be Scotty 2. I run a K&N filter and have used them for years. You can also use an Amsoil in the stock airbox. There are other options too. This months TDR has a big flow test that would be worthwhile reading.

Josh,

I have used the K&N RE0880 and it worked fine, well a lot better then stock for air flow. I now use the BHAF and I like it better I dont have to clean and oil it just right and I think it flow as good. I think anything anybody tells you here is going to be a lot better then stock.

I've been useing

the Amsoil air filter. It seems to work OK I drilled some big holes in the snorkle and that also helped. It is an oiled filter but it hasn't caused me any problems so far. LOL

Josh, well, you've been given the full basket of advise, all good if you need more air for the amount of fuel available.

Now I'll play contrarian and suggest that you go with a stock Fleetguard filter for now. The reason is that it's not a bad filter for a stock engine. It flows enough air for the amount of fuel you've got available now, but of course when you start turning things up a bit, then you benefit from the additional airflow some of the alternatives offer.

It's very likely that the current filter is fine, you can't really go by appearances when evaluating filters, actually when it looks dirty, it's doing a better job of providing your engine with clean air. As the larger passageways in the filter media clog, the engine pulls air through smaller openings in the filter and they do a better job of filtering.

As long as you are stock, and the filter minder is not pulling down, no need to change the filter.

However, with my greater than stock fueling, I'm happy with my BHAF and the housing that's pulling in outside air from two locations.

If I didn't have this system, I'd likely have one of Scotty's new setups.

I know this probably sounds stupid... but take in affect that things in this high altitude that I live in are screwy.

What is the point in flowing more air (better intake), when you havnen't added any additional fuel?

I can say that on several trucks here in town, as soon as they put the BHAF on their truck, they noticed a loss in power due to flowing too much air. Then when they added fuel, was when the new air intake outshined the stock one. I've always been told flowing too much air can actually hurt your power...

Just a thought.
