How do you tell if you have a 10. 5 or 11. 5 axle?

I also have not located the refill capacities to know how much to buy. I know poeple's opinions seem to vary greatly as far as what to put in there. I was planning to use the synthetic valvoline 75w90 that is at the local parts store. It gets pretty steep if you need 6 or so quarts. Can you order this kind of stuff for delivery or is that out due to combustability?

I'd at least like to find it by the gallon. Might even make sense to get a pail if it takes that much and the front uses the same stuff too. How often are folks changing the front fluid? I've read some folks say they never change it. That can't be right can it? Does the front spin with the front hubs or does it remain still while driving in 2wd? I really don't use 4x4 for any extended driving.

You'll need to buy 4 quarts, although it should take just less than that. Fill it to 1/2 inch below the drain hole opening.

thanks. someone told me it needed 6 of them. does it matter if you overfill it?

Any input on intervals for the front? rear too for that matter.

Look on the inside of the glove box. Pull out all the papers and look on the rear surface. There should be a sticker with the axle and the ratio.

I dont think your correct in the assumption that you have a 11. 5 inch ring gear in the rear of your 2500 truck. if you go to the dodge web site and build the truck it states that the 2500 with the diesel have 10. 5 inch rear ring gears.

It's easy to tell just by looking at the housing. The 11. 5 has a squared off section on the bottom. The 10. 5 doesn't. BTW, the dodge website often has errors. The HO CTD does come with the 11. 5. Mine has it.

NWCATMAN - You can. I was just giving the basic specs in the owner's manual, which state 1/4" + or - 1/4". So really, it can be anywhere from 1/2" below to even with the bottom of the fill hole.

$0.02

I performed the required 15000 axle lube change on the front and rear. Used Valvoline Synpower 75w90. Front took 3 full quarts (running out the fill hole), rear took 4 full quarts (maybe 1/4 to 1/2 below the fill hole). So, in my opinion, you'll need at least 7 quarts. Might as well buy a case of 12.

I plan to change again at 30000, then I might change to a 30000 mile interval.

Thanks for the clarification Rbattelle! Sometimes I only think in terms of 4X2's since that is what I have and is what I changed the fluid in.
