What is the best battery for the money for the fiver. Are the yellow tops worth the money? Just bought a '98 36' Travel EZ w/ 3 slides and both batteries are wasted.

Best Batteries

Hey Turboman,

I believe the best way to go is to use 2 6 volt Trojan batteries

hook together in series to make a very powerful 12 volt battery. These are the same batteries used in golf carts, and I have used these sucessfully in both my Motorhome and as the main source of power to my bait pumps on my offshore fishing boat. They run about 73 bucks each and you won't be disappointed in them!

Good Luck,

Dito. In my research of the Optimas, they aren't designed for deep cycle use, have less capacity, and cost a bunch of $.

Don't remember the brand, but I bought 6V Golf Cart batteries from Walmart. The last set of 6V Cart batteries from a battery house were dynosupreme!

They make really tall 6V'ers that fit in your 12V plastic case. I don't have the reason to buy bigger ones, but I don't doubt you can get a 6V'er that you can't carry that'll fit in the 12V footprint. Oo.

ditto on the Trojans. When I first got my trailer, I bought a brand new middle of the road 12V deep cycle. Camped in weather with highs of 10 deg celcius down to about -2 at night. With the furnace cycling continuously, battery was toast in 16 hours. Now with the two 6V Trojans, I can go for about 84 hours under similar conditions.

As far as using in our trucks goes, keep in mind that cranking power and amp-hours do not necessarily go hand in hand. I'll stick with a good set of 12V's in the truck.

I saw a right up on batteries in one of the trailer mags. the best thing about the golf cart batteries was how long they live.

they talked about how many cycles a battery was good for. I think a cycle was when you took a battery from fully charged down to 10. 5 volts or something. Here is what I recall

Car battery is good for about 25 cycles

Deep cycle wet battery good for about 200 cycles

Deep Cycle glass mat (optma) good for about 300 cycles

Golf cart batteries good for about 750 cycles!

How do you hook them up?

Both batteries are 6V, so to get 12V you run a jumper wire (heavy gauge) from the negitive terminal of one battery to the positive terminal of the other battery. Then you hook the RV connections to the remaining terminals (one is positive, one is negitive).

When my 5er needs new ones, it going to be a pair of 6V.

(I think Sears had them for around $50. 00 each, but they had to order them. Thats a good thing because when they order them you would think you would get a newer battery from the factory)

We have four (4) six volt batteries in the Kenworth Tractor which turns a 400hp 3406 Cat. This was the factory set up for deep cycle cranking. I suppose the two six volt batteries in the RV would work good also.

I have two 12V deep cycle batteries in my 5fer. I turn them off with a switch at the battery location when on shore power.

I cooked one when I first got the 5fer letting it stay on when the inverter was running. When not hooked up, I can see the need for extra batteries. Don't known how my setup would fare in a no hook up situation.

I was going to put to Marine Type 8D batteries in when I smoked the first one. They were just to heavy to get in the front compartment.
