Diesel, JP 8, or Jet A...whats the difference

New Cummins Parts Website

Here in the southeast there are quite a few brands to pick from and even biodiesel (B20), what brand has the reputation and for the best diesel for performance/mileage/cleaness... . leaving biodiesel out of the equation.

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Up here we got a lot of choices too. I never noticed any real difference between and brands. I buy wherever it is cheapest. Hess,Mobil, Shell, Citgo, Texaco and Sunoco. The only thing I do is always buy froma station that has a decent amount of volume. I avoid the 2 pump station that looks like it sells a hundred gallons a week. Doing this I have never had any water, algae or dirt problems in my filter. Haven't seen any biodiesel in my area.

I try to buy from truck stops. I buy it from a local farm store( Southern States) when i don't have time to go to the Flying J, but i notice a real decrease in milage if i don't drive to the hook. Randy

I far as I know currently there is not any real difference between diesel brands. Some areas result in diesel with a higher cetane due to the crude and refinery it was made in.
I have heard through company e-mail that my company is starting to test a diesel -type of system cleaner that comes with the fuel. I think it is called Techron 2 (for now), but for diesel. It is currently being tested in the Sacramento area only.
Not touting any brand but I try to buy my diesel from any where that sells a lot of diesel that way I am getting fresh fuel and not any of the crud from the bottom of their tank. Fresh fuel less chance of having biological growth and other crud in the fuel. Less fuel filter changes for me.

It's funny that you mention Chevron Techron, I try to buy that gas in my Jeep whenever I can because of the Tier rating of their brand.

The quality of the fuel depends on the QC guy at the terminal, not the brand.

I prefer seeing a cetane rating on the pumps if at all possible, not that it's any type of guarantee or anything. :D

Many years ago when I first purchased my 95 Cummins and when diesel was cheaper then gasoline, I used to get the best mileage from Chevron with a large turn over rate, but now it's all the same. Always go to a station with a fast turn over rate and modern pumps and fuel tanks to avoid water and sediments in the fuel.

Okay, side topic... sort of.

Since I have the infamous VP44, should I use Marvel Mystery Oil or TCW3 two-cycle boat oil as an additive?? I've been using the two-cycle oil on and off for the last 4 or 5 tanks.

Just another comment.

I am in central Illinois.

When I makea trip to south florida, I usually get fuel around Chattanoga Tn, and that fuel always shows an improvement in MPG by about 2!!! Anyone care to explain it? It does'nt seem to be station dependant either.

As you drive south it get warmer and the fuel expands so you have more

Actually I have no idea:-laf

Good advice. Most of it in a particular area may come from the same refiner. When I was a young man (a few years back) I asked an older man who worked at a service station, "What is the best oil to use in my car?" His answer was "Whatever brand I happen to be selling at the time", and that's kinda what it's like with different brands of diesel. bg

If I am correct all the fuel is the same. It travels thru a large piple line from areas like texas to areas up here. They will pump a large quantity of gasoline for a while and then switch over to diesel all in the same pipe. It is at the distribution plants that gas or diesel becomes a certain name brand this is done by adding the special secret additives that each brand uses before it goes into a tanker to bring it to your local station. With all the different additives in gasoline such as clean valves from shell and clean injectors from another company youmay want to stick with one brand or another. with diesel they dont add all that crap so I think its basically the same. The main thing is turnover so you get fresh dry clean fuel. Also the pipeline is one of the problems with ethanol. Since ethanol hold water it becomes corrosive to the pipe and messes up the diesel and gas. Currently ethanol must be shipped by tanker which is why we dont see it up here in the north (no grain fields around)

Are you going down hill?

The highest elevation I drive is west of Chattanoga. Not sure of the elevation, maybe 4500 ft.

But, here is the deal, the fumes are stronger and burn my eyes. Also, the mileage really doesn't vary much going from that area--south compared to going north to Chattanoga!!! After that fuel is exhausted and I buy nothern fuel the mileage drops again. There must be an additive that they use that is the difference.

I get my best mileage using hess, if i am in an area where there is no hess station then I will use Sunoco or Valero. Been driving a diesel for 11 yrs. now and have always got my best mileage with hess. My wife also says the same about gasoline purchased from Hess.

Fuel is fuel is fuel.

I pretty much agree. For the most part (if not all) it all comes through the same pipe line.

Certain brands may have their own addative package.

I like to use a local company that has bio but if not there I use Valero. everytime i stop at the local sunoco my truck runs like crap halfway through the tank. I'm not sure if the fuel they actually sell is sunoco or not because Its a odd ball place and other places like that sometimes only sell the brand name gas but the diesel is something els but move alot of fuel with truckers but i have had no luck.
