I have been looking and researching chips and other performance mods for my 98. 5 24 valve cummins. I was looking to start off with a chip of some sort, but I want one that I'm not going to have to take off and buy a better one later on down the road. I'm looking to later install injectors, but for now I want to stick with a chip. I have looked at Edge, TST, Diesel Dynamics and Blue chip boxes. I have the 5spd manual in my truck, so a clutch will come later, boost and pyros are in the works. Ive heard of stacking the EZ with the TST or the Blue chip but is this the best route to take to advance the timing as well as get the fueling I want, or would the Edge Comp be better ? The blue chip looks like a great chip but I havent't heard much about it. I want something compatible with other mods and also fairly reasonably priced. I do occasional towing but not enough to focus completely on towing. I like the idea of having adjustability, such as smoke control :D. Any advice will help.

You answered your own question. Edge Comp or the DD version of it (Diesel Dynamics Ultimate fueling module) will suit all your needs. I have no regrets.

BFC;

Have you had any trouble with your VP44 ? Ive heard that the pumps on the 98. 5's are prone to failure with a box hooked up.

No problem as of yet. It has been on a little over year, about 30,000 miles. Rumors as it that if the VP fails it will shortly after hooking wire tapping box. I try not let off the go pedal too fast when I'm at WOT and use Stanadyne performance additives at every fill up. Wetter it has anything to do with my VP lasting while bombed for over 30K miles(86K total), I don't know but it worked so far. I'm sure as hell not going to stop bombing:D :D that much I know:cool:

If your going to get the comp box you might as well get the drag version of it, More power after 2700 RPM. The standard comp will start to defuel after 2700 rpm's.

Take a look at the Blue Chip site for the pump failure writeup they have. It is pretty good. It seems that most of the pump failures are right away and also most are on 98. 5 and 99 trucks.

Get your every day power out of injectors and then a box for playing IMO.

Chip

tmckenzie, I went with the Super Chip D-Box, I can't say anything bad about the EZ for I have not ran one of them this chip is half the price of the ez and realy made the CTD come to life also changed the shift points, I would like to run across someone with an EZ to see what the diff would be,so far real happy with this chip. Happy hunting Harv;)

Hey Ron,

How much more is the drag version and is the only difference that it doesn't defuel after 2700? Is it worth it?

Harv,

How much did you give for your superchip and where did you get it at? The cheapest I have found is ~$550 and I can get a comp box for $610.

Super Chip

tmckenzie I gave 400. 00 for this chip I have the name & adress at work in my office ill get it for you and post it, I was all fired up to bye a EZComp, I called the # in the TDR Mag the guy I talked to Quoted me 600. 00 & 790. 00 and Didn't realy act like he had the time to talk about it. The guy i work for has been runnig a Super Chip for a year or so and was real Happy with it so i thought what the heck. so far so good. they have a web www.superchips.com you might look there and get some info. Harv

If I am not mistaken, Edge makes the Superchips D-box as well as a number of others. I think you got a very good deal on the box you got. The EZ usually sells for about $425 if you know where to look.
