Which clutch should I use? I make about 30lbs of boost and I do some towing although not a lot. I just want a good smooooth clutch. Will the stock over the counter clutch hold and then what pilot bearing is best? Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Scott.

The stock first gen ('89-'93) clutch is Excellent. It is made by Sachs and has a full 13" disc with a cast iron cover. It is a real truck clutch superior to the new truck's clutches. Autozone has the exact OEM replacement for about $500. That's about twice what the 2 nd gen clutch costs. I used a stock replacement pilot bushing from Cummins-p/n 3915043.

As far as being smooth it will be as good as when the truck was new. You may still get take off shudder in 1st and Reverse and the transmission may growl when pulling hard at low rpm or simply floating at low rpm.

Tell me more....

Hey Stab!:)

Can you tell us more about the SBC clutch you installed?

From past conversations I remember you saying that you went w/ the Sachs/SBC "CON ?"

What was the cost? Performance? Do you still get the chatter?

Thanks!

Southbend - rules! I've had the original Sach's, a good after market and finally the Southbend. I feel that the SB clutch is by far the best of them all. Call Peter at SB - you will not find a better more customer oriented or knowledgeable person to deal with. You might also talk to him about the life span of the pilot bearings after a new clutch installation. Good luck

Happy trails

SBC!

I installed the South Bend Clutch # MU 0090 CON-O Clutch Kit.

600 + 20 to ship.

No clatter, no noise at all from the clutch. I also installed the Kevlar pilot bushing, that I think is kind of an over kill, but that is the way I do everything! I can't stand doing something over again because of cut corners. I believe we accomplished the %100 preventative measures in this case.

The clutch is as smooth as anything I've driven. I've only had about 12k behind it so far so the slippage has not been an issue. I was able to slip the Sachs system at will sense owning the truck. I also achieved the 30# boost number. Only about 26# now as I'm starting from base line, making some turbo mods before cranking up the fuel again.

The NV4500 noise is gotten much better sense install. Still not as good as I would like, but... ... ... ... ... . The shifter shaft was bent at install to keep it up and out of the way while in fifth gear.

Hey Stab & Bob!:)

I agree..... SOUTH BEND RULES!:D

I also have a SBC in my truck but I went w/ their SBC/Luk Kit instead of the SBC/Sachs set up. At the time I did mine many of the SBC "CON" set-up were consider 'over kill' for our trucks. Many new/different "CON" configurations are now available since my install.

I have been completely happy w/ the Luk/SBC kit that I installed. This kit uses a Valeo Disk/Luk Pressure plate/ Special throw out bearing & the Kevlar Pilot bushing for $450. 00 delivered. This is a Luk 12. 25" disk instead of the Sachs 13" disk. Ask Peter or Woody for further details.

Our other First Gen is in need of a rear main seal and we wanted to do the clutch while in there. I'm torn between the SBC "CON-O" and the SBC/Luk kit that I used. Niether truck tows anything and the Luk has great daily driving qualities. The "CON" series sounds like the hot ticket though... .

The Sachs will hold better and a lot smoother with the premium quality disk facing, not the standard facing. Most sources use the standard facing, I believe.

I have to disagree with Joe on this one. The Stock pressure plate in the 12 1/4" Luk has a Higher plate load and torque capasity than the stock 13" Valeo pressure plate. I have the plate load tables as well as the torque statistics to prove it. Now this is before any modifications or changes have been made. I am only talking brand new stock to stock side by side. ;)

Sorry Joe, didn't mean to step on you here.

Peter

Hey Peter!:)

Did you mean to type stock 13" Valeo pressure plate or should that read 13" Sachs?

If that's correct... . Does Valeo make the Pressure Plate in the Sachs assembly?

Also Peter... If you have a moment could you restate your feelings and opinions/recomendation on the differences between the SBC/Luk Clutch & the SBC/Sachs "CON" Kit for our older trucks?

TIA... . KEENO:D

I went with a new flywheel with the kevlar pilot bushing installed ( purchased from Peter at SB). It eliminated a vibration at 60 to 70 mph - I bought it from SBC because I didn't trust anyone in the local area to bore the pilot hole out correctly. Mine is far better than the original Sachs as far as smoothness and feel. As before good luck on whatever you decide.

Happy trails

Bob:)
