As you may have read, my 2001 ram was totalled.

My question is : Where is the mileage that the odometer displays stored at. I. E. Which vehicle computer, and where is it located.

Insurance wants mileage info, and I need to retrieve it, but the whole front end is gone. No batteries, ect...

Thanks a million

I dont know where the mileage is stored but they access it with the data port under the dash below the steering wheel where they hook up the OBD unit. At least its that way on a 97.

When my instrument panel died, I was told that the mileage is stored in two places. It's stored in memory in the instrument cluster, and it's also stored in the ECM (or was it PCM).

But basically, becuase of this I was out of a truck while I waited for the new panel to be shipped since the two readings had to match.

The two mileage sources only have to match for legal reasons. I replaced the whole instrument cluster with one from a boneyard and it worked fine.

Unfortunately, the dealer was really hung up on the legal reasons. I told him to just add 500 miles to the reading that they would program into the cluster and I'd make sure to drive less than that while I was waiting on it. No go... .

If it ever happens again... . looks like the boneyard will have to be the first place I start looking.
