82' Diesel Volvo

Skid steer questions

My wife has orders to Germany. We leave in June. We have to sell my '95 CTD (I'm the original owner). She promised I can have a new one when we return.

However, I need a used vehicle in Germany for three years. A friend (from Norwegian army) recommended a Volvo V70 diesel. I like the size of the car, but I don't know anything about Volvo diesels, or any other diesels in Europe. Does anyone have any experience to offer?

Thanks,

Tim

some military folks ship their diesel trucks over to Europe to use while serving overseas... .

a friend of mine shipped his 2000 F350 Powerstroke crewcab over to Germany and then eventually to Aviano Italy and then had it shipped back stateside afew years back.

Both he and his wife were active military USAF, he retired overseas and wife retired s soon as they returned stateside back in 03 or 04... .

this might be an option... ...

if you need more info, PM me and I might be able to put you in contact with them

You could ship it, the military will pay for. A few drawbacks might be it size(if thats a drawback), and fuel mileage. Europe's fuel prices are almost double that of here and a diesel car is sure to get better mileage. As far as the size thing, Friends I have in the military in Germany really complain about traffic and parking for larger vehicles. Might not be a problem on base, but off it may end up being a burden. What about storing it? I have a garage that would be willing to house it for you for FREE, just have to leave the keys of course;)

Take your truck!

I'm USAF stationed in Stuttgart and there are 4 Dodge CTD's here on Patch Barracks--3 of them are 2003-2006 and one is a 1999 CTD 3500 Dually. There are several Powerstrokes here too! Lots of Suburbans, Tahoes, F-150s, Chevy 1500s, etc over here too and people don't have too many issues.

Diesel prices here are around $5 a gallon but you can get fuel coupons at AAFES and fill up off base at ESSO stations for half that price with the coupons.

The major drawback is parking it in the smaller German towns and navigating some of the smaller blacktop roads. Other than that, no issues on the autobahn and you can park out in the back 40 in the shopping areas.

We brought our Grand Cherokee over here and have no problems. I kicked myself for not shipping over me Ram 1500 after I got here because I could have saved $9000 and used it over here with no problems!

If you really insist on not bringing your truck over here, then I would recommend getting a German Spec VW Golf/Passat TDI, Audi A4 or Mercedes 200/300 series (any year good for these indestructable workhorses!). You going to drop $10K to get a good one though. Or you can do what a lot of guys do and get an old BMW or Audi gasser for $1,500. You won't find a decent diesel for less than $5K. I went through this and ulitimately ended up with a 1999 German Spec VW Passat 1. 8i gasser.

Sorry didn't mean to make this so long.

Back in '88, I took a full-size Ford F150 (standard cab/long bed) with me to Naples, Italy. It's not as long as our Quad Cabs, but I drove it all around from Castle Volturno through Pinetemarre, Lago Patria, Pouzzouli, Bagnoli, Posillipo, over to Capodichino, and on into downtown Naples and really didn't have any problems. I look at it like this - the people there drive their vans (the same vehicle as our Sprinter) and trucks everywhere and your truck won't be any bigger than those vehicles. Other than the fuel issue, take it with you.

Another plus is that you can make some extra spending money by helping others move from one apartment or house to another - they pay however much for the load plus fuel.
