My father just bought an 08 F350 PSD with the automatic. He says if he drives very carefully he can get it to 13. 5mpg on the overhead... He is now wishing he would have gotten a Dodge. My truck gets that pulling my 40ft toy hauler... Scotty

You let your BIL buy a Ford PS? What kind of relative would to that? :)

Believe me, I tried. He's one of those die hard, bull headed ferd fans. He's never had anything else. He has bought a new 67, 71, 8?, 90, 00 and now the 08. He has had mega problems with all of them. Don't know about the 08. He doesn't tell me everything.

I can't believe I am even saying this, but if I was buying a truck today, I'd probably get the Duramax... only because Dodge didn't do enough homework to put together an unbeatable package worthy of the Cummins name. Check this out. It's long, but well worth the read.

Maybe Dodge with a Cummins isn't everything you want it to be, but it is everything I want it to be.

Exactly... . I was like. Then I read the article and it didn't really say anything bad. I guess he likes the darkside.

Hmmmmm From what I can see, only ONE manufacturer is being honest, right on the side of the truck honest, about who builds the engine under the hood. What the heck is a Duramax or Powerstroke anyway?? Marketing BS is all I see. When I see a Dodge, it says Cummins on the fender for all the world to see.

The ratings are all so close nowadays, what are we talking about 5-10 hp difference? Do you think you can feel 5-10hp in a 7-8000lb truck? The chevy is a glorified car, IFS and all, little bitty tires lost in overblown fenders, man those are ugly! The Ford isn't a bad truck I just have NO faith in the engine after the 6. 0L debacle. How did they ever sell ANY of those after the first year? The third gen Dodge is a well proven reliable platform and the Cummins is without any doubt the most heavy duty powerplant you can buy in a light duty truck. I've tried all of the brands in the past. I know what I like and what works for me. I have voted with my $$$ several times over. ;)

Honest?

What the report indicated to me was that all three trucks could get that load to the top of the hill pretty dang quick. With in a second or two of the others. That says a lot... Now whether all three have the breakdowns that we don't want is a different story. Maybe most of us have had bad experiences with all three brands. What brand is your wife? Maybe all us men have had breakdowns at the wrong time with our wife. Fix her up and mow grass some more. I personally have driven a new 450 Ford with pickup body and I think it is a better built truck than a new DC (except) for the engine. ) The Cummins is at this time a better engine. Time will tell.

The tests were what I have been looking for. . for a long time.

The bottom line is the most torque at the lowest rpm lasting the longest with easy access to the engine for all us grease monkeys to keep our trucks on the road so we can rv or work our trucks hard..... cummins for life !

Last week, I was filling-up at the Flying-J, here in Phoenix, & ran across a guy with a Duramax ('01 or '02) with a huge trailer. Since I love "talking diesels" I asked him how he liked his truck?

Turns out that he tows commercially, out of Phoenix, & had over 600,000 miles on his unit. The engine has never been touched & has some Banks performance goodies, on it. The Allison was replaced by GM at about 450,000 miles. There was nothing wrong with the trans but, GM wanted to see what the inside of the trans. & transfercase looked like with heavy towing miles. He did not want to give up the trans. because it had been trouble-free. So, GM offered a new transmission warranty on a brand new trans & transfercase. He took the deal.

I'm not trying to "promote" the Duramax/Allison but, I thought it was interesting that this guy was having good luck with his.

Personally, I wish ALL the trucks had good engine/trans. combinations. That would create more competition in the industry & we, probably, would end up with better trucks, in the long run. A variety of quality vehicles would keep the industry on their toes.

BTW, I have two Dodge/Cummins products. However, it's good to know that the GM product seems to be pretty good, also.

If I bought a brand new truck today it would be a GMC, the dodge I feel has the best engine but the body and interior are cheap. The ford has a good body and interior but the engine is junk. The chevy/GMC have good engines bodies and interiors even though the bodies arent the prettiest. If you go back to the second gens I'd have a dodge over any chevy or ford 1994-2002.

After driving and towing with my 07. 5 68rfe I am convinced that DC now has a transmission that will compete with any transmission. In the long run it will drive a large portion of manual owners to go with the 68. :-laf

The Isuzu-max Allison might be a decent powertrain but I beg to differ on the GM trucks. I haven't looked at or driven the new ones admittedly but the previous generation needed a bunch of upgrades the Dodge doesn't to turn it into a truck. First off the tires are embarrassingly tiny. They might hold the rated load but I suspect just barely. The shocks were so soft the truck was dangerous on bumpy two lanes. The mirrors previously availible were no adequate fo any kind of towing. They may have fixed some of this stuff, hopefully so. My experience was that it took several thousand dollars to get either my '01 or '03 Chevys even close to the Dodge when it was stock. Besides the Dodge got substantially better milage, and provided much more useable torque on the low end. I also found the Isuszu-max to be LOUD compared to the Cummins under load. The GMs are great if all you tow is a boat to the lake, of a small trailer. Start really working them and they do not hold a candle to the Dodge platform. I also had way more problems with GMs quality that I have had with Dodge. That is on two Chevys and five Dodges. The look of the interior may not appeal to you, though I like the '06 and up inside, but I don't find it cheap at all. Purposeful and durable, like a truck should be. Too much carlike froo-froo on the GMs. Just depends on what you want in a truck.

Very well said BHolm. I can not speak for GM because I was finished with GM after I purchased my last GM car in 69. Likewise I was finished with Ferd when I purchased my last Ferd, which was an F250 gasses. It's been Dodge/Cummins trucks and Toyota cars ever since.

You still can not get an engine that's better then a Cummins. The trucks not bad either. I love my Dodge Cummins.

My nieghbor has an 08 Ford crew cab dually. With 3,000 miles on it it gets 6 mpg towing and 10. 5 emty. It has the "tow monster" package which comes with the 4. 30 gears and hence the 24,000 capability. He says it never downshifts and will tow his 32' fifth wheel and 21' boat up and down the hills with ease around here. He has talked to a few Ford owners with the 3. 73 gears and they do get better mileage but downshift a lot when towing heavy.

He is not happy with the mileage and is still talking to Ford about a solution.
