I'm thinking of putting an exhaust brake on my truck. I've only had one which was already on a truck I bought. It was the Jacobs belt driven brake. I'd rather not go with the belt drive unless it has some big advantages. But the Jacobs stopped working abouth 2000 miles after I bought the truck. Are they known for giving trouble?

I had a Banks EB on my 01 & never any problems with it. I have a pacbrake on my 05 & havn't had it very long. I went with the pac because I didn't like the idiea of a longer serpentine belt or the vacum pump that the jacobs uses. The air compressor is cheaper to replace if it goes out. I have an air tank & plan on adding another for more capacity to run horns & air up tires.

Both the Jacobs and PacBrake are controlled by the ECM... . You'll find that if you examine the information on the web sights for both... you'll find that the PacBrake has more retarding HP at lower RPM based on their technology... . Both companies use in house engineering and manufacturing... . both are approved by Cummins for installation on their engines and also approve the engine brakes on their larger engines...

With the pacbrake you can use the air compressor and reserve tank to run Air Bags, and Air Horns like all of my trucks have on them... .

Hope this helps... .

I have to agree with Jim, the PRXB Pacbrake is much stronger braking at lower rpm's. I just changed my Jacobs to a PRXB, and it brakes better from 1500 down to 1000 rpm as good or better than the Jacobs did from 2600 down to 2000 rpm. It is much faster actuating also, as soon as you let off the go pedal, or pull the switch it is braking almost instantly, where the Jacobs had the 1 or 2 second delay, the air is much faster than the vacuume.

BTW Jim, thanks for the fast service, and it is as you said it would be, if not better.

pac brake cost?

i called a dodge dealer ,my cost for the jake brake is 1050. + shipping. is the pac cost, close in price. kp

exhaust brakes

I prefer the Pac Brake for the connections are pipe threaded not the slip on tube type. They recomended changing the hose every year for me that could be every 4 months. So went to low pressure hyd hose. Works great. I just switch it on or off.

I had a PAC on my 2001, now a Jake on the 05. I know it's not the same brake as the new pacs, but my old pacbrake "braked" circles around the jake I have now. Sometimes I think all it's doing is making noise.

I have a PacBrake on my 03. It works great, slows down my truck with a 15K 5er just fine. Went down a 4% grade on I81 in Pa. recently, held @53mph in 5th gear, never touched the service brakes. Actually had to get on the throttle a little bit when it slowed it below 50.

I was just quoted $1750 installed by Dodge "dealer".

Hmm... isn't this two clamps and a plugin on the '06?

Maybe add 1 hr to that 10 mins for an enable/disable switch?

I must be missing something. . lol

Went with Jacobs to also avoid any warranty issues and that's the one the dealer installed. The port bolt for pyrometer would not come out, after much persistance it finally did and I still don't have an answer whether Jacobs or Dodge will cover the stripped threads on the exhaust elbow or replace the elbow all together. If not the port will have to be re-tapped... :-(

No, there's a bit more to it than that. They have to install a vacuum pump and new serpentine belt to cover the additional length. They claimed 8 hours labor. Your stated quote was about what I paid. If you go with Pac it will require an electric compressor which should be easier to install and less expensive.

A year ago I bought my Pac Brake PRXB from member Jelag for about $1000 (including brake, compressor, switch and remote tank). Installed in about 3 hours (my first exhaust brake install). Did the install myself in the garage with no special tools.

The compressor and tank gives me air for air horns and the airbags on my trailer. I think I remember a special that is going on where you get the tank and air hose set free. DOn't know if that's till going on. PM "Jelag".

I had a Jacobs installed when I bought my truck. It's worked great. I tow 16k through the mountains of Colorado. I go down to fourth, and never have to use the brakes. I think that Eisenhower and Rabbit Ears pass is in the 7% range. I like the delay on the Jacobs, not sure if the others have it. I think you could have problems when you shift the stick if you didn't have it.

One more thing. When I had mine installed, I used the local Cummins dealer. They were much cheaper than the Dodge Boys.
